Weekend Trip to Rocky Mountain Glamping

We had a great experience. Dot and Byron were helpful getting our camper in. There were so many lovely spots to just sit and look at the river. Next time we will come back and try the tents or wagons as they look so fun!

Weekend Trip to Stellar Mountain Escape

Beats the busy campgrounds we had a nice quiet stay in my 15 ft campernvan. Very beautiful view of moon and the stars at night. Over all we would recommend staying here if your looking for a nice quiet spot. The camp spots are close to each other though so not completely alone. Beautiful spot though.

3 nights at Rocky Mountain Glamping

This was our 4th time staying at Dot & Byron's Frontier campsite. It is the most beautiful, artfully designed campsite we have ever stayed at and quickly became my family's favorite. We stay there with our little kids and they have a wonderful time hiking and exploring the gorgeous terrain and visiting the stream, flamingo pond, and heart pond. Our kids often say they want to live at the campsite. Dot and Byron are wonderful hosts and do an excellent job making guests feel at home. I highly recommend any of their campsites for romantic getaways or for family camping made easy. We'll be back for years to come.

1 night at Camp Always Choose Adventures

The host, Chantelle, was welcoming and helpful. She built a fire in the common area for s’mores at night. We ended up setting up in “The Overlooking” spot and the view was beautiful. Lots of hiking trails and a lake near by. Would return!

2 nights at Montgomery Homestead

Bonnie and the homestead were perfection. I was in a pinch and needed to find a place to stay around the Denver area. Bonnie was quick with a response when I messaged her with some questions. The place was easy to find. Truly a country oasis. Gorgeous views and helpful amenities provided. If you’re looking to make a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, this location was ideal. Only about an 1.5 hour drive to one of the park entrances. Stopped in Boulder for some breakfast, day well spent. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe and cared for by being there. Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven Bonnie! Can’t wait to come and visit again!

Chantelle was excellent, quick to respond. Even offered me a sleeping bag if I got too cold. She also recommended a hiking trail that I hit the next morning and it turned out to be perfect. Highly recommend!

Weekend Trip to Logan Ranch Campground

We loved camping at the Logan Ranch, its secluded peacefulness and the beautiful views are just what we were looking for. Our two dogs had a blast running up and down the hills and watching the wildlife around. The campsites are far enough away from each other to give you that feeling of being all alone, it was the perfect recipe for a relaxing weekend getaway but close to home for us.

Weekend Trip to Logan Ranch Campground

We loved camping in our pop-up at Logan Ranch. We had site 10, which was up a small hill and very secluded. We did several hikes around the property, which is extraordinarily beautiful, with hills, trees, cliffs of exposed granite, and even some exposed quartz deposits. Despite the foggy and rainy weather, we had a great time and will definitely be back!

Weekend Trip to Rocky Mountain Glamping

We (me, my partner and our three young kids) came out for a rainy Memorial Day weekend and couldn't have been cozier and happier in the covered wagon and teardrop trailer at night. The property is stunning and Dot is a fantastic host who has thought of everything. We had a lovely hike on the property, played in the creek, and enjoyed the hammocks, swing chairs and propane fire pit when it wasn't too wet out. There's lots to do nearby in Lyons (library, pinball arcade), Longmont and Boulder if the weather gets bad. I wouldn't hesitate to book another covered wagon or a canvas tent again.

Bryan and I love Logan Ranch. It's quiet, secluded. Robert and Elyse are really great people. We stay on their land 2 or 3 times a year.

3 nights at Boulder Chicken Ranch

A real vibe. Great location and the other campers were so friendly it felt like I was camping at a little festival or something. The host helped us to figure out the shower early in the morning, and it was a really peaceful atmosphere.

3 nights at Prospector’s Rush

Great site! Loved the remote-ness of it and how it wasn’t an overpopulated camping site. This was exactly the style of camping we were looking for! We arrived in the dark and was a little hard to find the site originally. Look for the white trailer on the left as soon as you get on two brothers road.

Weekend Trip to Stellar Mountain Escape

Our stay at Stellar Mountain Escape was serene (as the campsite is named). The directions to get to the camp were provided by the host and were precise. The weather dampened outdoor activities, it was wet and dreary the whole time beginning our first night there. It was a little more secluded than we anticipated but easy enough to zip in town to get a warm drink and buy a game to play. The campsite was set up nicely with chairs, a firepit with a slide out grill and a picnic table. We were greeted by a lovely German shepherd sitting majestically as drove past the host’s driveway!

Our family has resided on this magnificent property for over 20 years. In the 1950s, before the home was built, our land was known as "the point." Lovers used to drive onto the property, park at the end of the lot which overlooks the eastern plains, and... you know... We live on 6.5 acres of stunning forested land located 1000 feet above downtown Boulder. Our property rests on a peninsula with views of the white-capped peaks to the west and the city lights to the east. The property feels far away from the bustle of city life, yet it is only an EIGHT-MINUTE drive to the heart of downtown Boulder's historic shopping district and ten minutes from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Vista Tranquila, the name given to our property by its previous owners, has trails to meander, picnic tables, horseshoes, swings hanging from the trees, a competitive-level trampoline, benches with views, and hammocks. The communal food prep area has a gas grill, a table for food prep, and a seating area. We request that guests pack out all trash. Since we do not provide stoves, pans, utensils, or cleanup facilities, please bring paper towels to wipe off your stoves, pans, dishes, and utensils. A well-maintained portable flush toilet is provided in a tall tent near the main residence. A spigot can be found with fresh well water on the back side of the main residence. We do not offer showers. However, the Boulder Recreation Center (a 10-minute drive) offers showers and other facilities for a small fee. You can enjoy a historic mining town experience with fine dining and live bluegrass/ folk music at the town of Gold Hill which is less than 20 minutes up our canyon. Kayakers, climbers, hikers, and cyclists (mountain, road, and gravel) will have an outdoor playground within a very short drive or right outside our door. World-class climbing located at Eldorado Canyon State Park is only a 25-minute drive. If you seek bigger peaks beyond Boulder Mountain Parks, the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park are a gorgeous 45-minute drive.

Stroll on over to the South or Middle for renowned fly fishing. For climbers, there are over 50 climbs in South Saint Vrain Canyon! Dark Skies: If you like to watch the stars and meteor showers, Bliss Canyon is blessed with dark skies with little light from the plains. Bring your telescopes and explore the Universe. The closest trailhead in RMNP is 10 miles, the next trailhead at Wild Basin entrance to the park is 13 miles, and the Beaver Meadows entrance (main entrance) is 36 miles. Rocky Mountain National Park has breathtaking drives, easy strolls with interpretive signs, and 360 miles of trails. (Advance reservation required for entry 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for main park, or 5:00 am to 6:00 pm for Bear Lake corridor.) Indian Peaks Wilderness also has several nearby access points and trailheads. Ask Dot for details. The charming town of Lyons is 20 minutes away with coffee shops, restaurants, bars, lots of great live music, and quaint shops. Though we live on the property, the tiny house is your own private space and we'll respect your privacy during your stay. Neighboring houses are visible from the property in one direction. The other direction all that can be seen is trees, mountains and sky. There is space to pitch a tent next to the tiny house for additional hipcampers.

This is a wonderful spot to fuel up or refuel after your grand Colorado adventure. I am one house west of the local grocery, hardware and pet stores, as well as catty-corner from Me Oh My Pie (delicious bakery and cafe), The Swing Station (Live Music & bar), and just one minute down the road from Vern's (cinnamon rolls and chicken friend steak!!). I also sit at the end of the Poudre Trail, a 21-mile paved recreation trail that follows the river down to Greely, CO. There is a loop in the driveway for turning around.

Camping near Estes Park guide

Overview

Whether you like to hike and climb in the mountains or just want to enjoy the views, you’ll find so many options for things to do in and around Estes Park. Not only is it the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, but the town itself offers opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, and water sports. Campers will also find everything from amenity-packed RV resorts and glamping yurts close to downtown Estes Park to secluded tent spots in Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding national forest.

Where to go

Estes Park Village

Only 90 minutes from downtown Denver, Estes Park makes a great basecamp for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. You’ll find several RV parks with full hookups just outside the city limits and some have tiny cabins and yurts available for rent too. Mary's Lake is a popular family-friendly spot. In town, you can take a stroll along the riverwalk where you’ll find dozens of coffee shops, restaurants, and galleries and visit Estes Lake, where you can rent paddle boards, kayaks, and pontoon boats to get out on the lake. Wildlife is so plentiful here it’s not uncommon to see a herd of elk walking through downtown.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Known for its high mountain scenery and endless trails, Rocky Mountain National Park is a main reason to head to Estes Park. The Beaver Meadows Entrance Station and Visitor Center is less than a 10-minute drive from Estes Park, with free shuttle buses running from Estes Park to park trailheads in summer. Campers will find five campgrounds with RV, tent, and group sites—four are set near Estes Park and the other is near the Grand Lake entrance on Trail Ridge Road. You can also find plenty of backcountry sites. Reservations are highly recommended for Rocky Mountain National Park campgrounds but some first-come, first-served sites are available.

Roosevelt National Forest

For those looking for some scenery away from the crowds in Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest rivals the national park and provides even more opportunities for outdoor recreation. The forest borders Rocky Mountain along the north and east sides, and is just an hour or so drive from Estes Park. The Long Draw and Tom Bennett campgrounds offer fantastic views and are incredibly popular spots for Colorado locals.

When to go

The best time to camp and hike in Estes Park is from late May through mid September as long as you’re prepared for chilly nights. Estes Park sits at 7,522 feet above sea level and many of the campgrounds in Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest are even higher, meaning that you can expect cool evening temperatures even in summer. The area is busiest in summer and when fall colors are at their peak, typically in late September through early October. A few Estes Park campgrounds stay open in winter for those looking to ski and snowshoe.

Camping in Estes Park is extremely popular. Book campground reservations well in advance.
No hookups are available at any area national park campgrounds, although dump stations can be found at Glacier Bay and Moraine Park.
Estes Park is bear country. Store food in campground bear lockers.
Free shuttle buses run from Estes Park into Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer months. This is a great way to enjoy the park sights without the hassle of finding parking and dealing with traffic.
