My family of 5 absolutely loved The Four Seasons! We stayed right above the river and it was not only beautiful but also so nice to hear the river while going to sleep and waking up to it! Everyone was very friendly and everything was accesible! It was also so nice to have the town nearby! Perfect spot to camp but also go out and do something fun!

Yeti was great for our first camping trip in the new van. Tim was an amazing host, and very attentive. We arrived later than we wanted on the first night and Tim came down from his cabin and showed us around, even though it was dark and late. Campsites are well spread out, amenities are awesome for a quick paddle around the pond or some afternoon leisure games. Would definitely go back!!!

Weekend Trip to GlampingColorado.com

We had a great time staying here for a couple of nights! The kitchenette with grill was a wonderful feature. And we appreciated being able to take cover in the yurt during the thunderstorms that rolled through, with ample space inside, and games, and hot tea. The area is beautiful with views all around, and it felt very private. We would love to go back!

High Peaks Campground is exceptional! Peaceful, the sites are nicely spread apart, and the views are incredible! Close to the Sand Dunes, Colorado Gators and the UFO Watchtower! Christine is an incredible host, and it available and friendly! Definitely highly recommended!

The views of the sand dunes and surrounding mountains were wonderful and the stargazing at night was incredible because of the clear sky! Christine welcomed us as we checked in and said that we were welcome to ride around the property with 4 wheelers , so my two granddaughters took advantage! Water pressure was low but no big deal, we had a great time!

Weekend Trip to M Lazy C Ranch

We had an amazing time stay on M Lazy C’s land. We found it as a quick find just to stay for a night and realized how amazing it was and wished we stayed for two nights. It was easy to find, simple check in process, and has amenities. We stayed in the primitive site, which had a picnic table and a fire pit. We got access to the bathhouse and hot tub. They even offered horseback riding lessons, which we signed up for last minute and it was so much fun!

Paul was very hospitable and welcoming to his property. It’s a lovely property surrounded by the beautiful mountains. I had a very wonderful day. The bathroom and shower is nice and clean and it’s centrally located to a lot of Hot Springs and hiking areas and such.

Paul was very courteous and friendly. My wife and I got in late and I had forgotten the gate code and he came out to open it up for us and show us the way to our campsite in the dark. The site itself is beautiful sitting in site of the mountains and far enough out to see the stars in amazing detail. Sadly we got in too late to make a fire but there was cut wood stacked and waiting next to the fire pit. The best part for my wife and I was the bathroom. The shower's temp and pressure were awesome and the live edge wood sheathing the walls smelled amazing afterwards. It was like a nice little sauna and exactly what we needed after a couple days camping elsewhere. All in All I'd definitely recommend Mountain Bird Alpine Desert Campsite. We'll definitely be making our way back sometime for a longer stay.

1 night at Dreamweavers Oasis

Lil Buddha was a gem within a gem! A trailer that’s all you need for coziness, a bed and shelf, on land graced by mt Blanca and all the touches those working the land have added. Such wholesome ways to breathe in the forest there, especially walking outside in middle of the night to stargaze and see all the dancing solar lights on the ground.. illuminating the wild irises and flora.

It was a very nice stay, waking up to a beautiful view was amazing! We had a nice time setting up camp that night. My dog enjoyed walking around the area.

2 nights at High Peaks Campground

This was one of the coolest camping spots we’ve ever stayed at. We happened to be the only campers on the property the first night and stayed at tent site 17. The second night another set of campers joined but they were far enough away that we couldn’t hear them. We had a camper van as well as a truck with teardrop camper and there was plenty of room at tent site 17. The campground is out in the middle of nowhere. You can see the great sand dunes way off in the distance which is cool and you can’t beat the star gazing. Luckily we were the only folks at the campground. You can definitely see other campers on the campground (if there had been some) as there’s no trees or anything between the sites. They are spaced far enough apart though. Would recommend if you want beautiful views of the sky.

This was a 10 out of 10 experience from the scenery to the accommodations. It was rural enough, but still had the connection of Wi-Fi. It was the perfect balance of unplugging and being in nature while not missing any emails. I would absolutely come back here again. The space had everything you could need!

I bought this land to move from HoustonLearn more about this land:I widened the gate and moved my mailbox for easier access. Butane fire rings allowed on private property during a fire ban . Camp anywhere on 60 acres. In one direction there are rolling meadow. Another rocky outcropping. Look to the south and you’ll see the BLM land that shares my fence line. If you want access to town you’re there. You choose how you want to feel. In the woods, in the forest, on huge rocks, flat land or turn around and see CR 1 ( 1/4 mile driveway). Forty five minutes west of Colorado Springs, ten miles to Divide for grocers. One half mile to ice, gas, pizza etc. It is first come first serve with the sites. Two that are near trees for large RVs. One up higher works for pull thru trailers. Plenty of room in the pasture. I just got my first negative review referring to it being dry prairie land. Some pictures are from late last summer.. We haven’t had enough rain yet for it to green up. Also it can be windy.

COLORADO WINTER TRAVEL: There is a possibility of snowy roads anytime from September through March. It's such fickle weather. One day can be sunny and 50 degrees and the next day a 6-inch snowfall. Generally, the roads clear up within a day or two of a snowfall so the impact isn't too troublesome. If you rent our place in this time frame, good all season tires are advisable. Our driveway is fairly flat and the county road to the house is plowed often. If there is a snowfall during your stay, we will have the driveway plowed out if we get more than 4 inches of snow and after the snow has stopped falling. If a snowfall lasts more than a single day, we may have it plowed out each day of a snowfall if more than 4 inches accumulate. Use caution during any snowfall as ground can become unexpectedly slippery. Message us if you have any issues.

There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching. New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. Welcome to the San Luis Valley; the largest Alpine Valley in the world! San Luis Valley is a region in south-central Colorado with a small portion overlapping into New Mexico. The valley is approximately 122 miles long and 74 miles wide, making it the largest alpine valley in the world. It extends from the Continental Divide on the northwest rim into New Mexico on the south. This campground sits close to the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. I encourage binoculars or even a telescope to view wildlife and check out the Rockies and then the night sky views! Looking to submerse yourself in nature? The Sangre de Cristo Range in Colorado contains the following 14ers: Blanca Peak, Challenger Point, Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Culebra Peak, Ellingwood Point, Humboldt Peak, Kit Carson Peak, Mount Lindsey, and Little Bear Peak. Great Sand Dunes are visible from every site. With unlimited mountain views, beautiful starry night skies, come see the Milky Way, Eclipse, even Meteor showers!!! History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years. In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing! My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all! You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on. Accommodations for those with livestock or horses, just make sure you chat in advance your initial message. Close to BLM, and National Forest as well as 3 hot springs within 20 miles and the Great Sand Dunes. We are still under construction and making changes often so bear with us while we continue to add and change things for the better!

We are conveniently located on Hwy 50, in Bighorn Sheep Canyon, and have all sorts of rental options for your outdoor adventure needs. We have four entrances marked by sail flags into the campground, two by the lake, one near the bathhouse, and one by the post office (on our property). The map of the Arkansas River has our campground listed! Adventure awaits with home to the highest mountain peaks in Colorado and the river and 102 miles of Trout Gold Medal Water. There is access to white water rafting, guided fishing, and fishing lessons. There are at least 5 hot springs within 60 miles of Twin Bridges Campground. Salida is considered the white-water rafting capitol of the US by some and has a whitewater park and surfing wave. Salida area is also home to a ton of hiking (14'ers anyone?) and mountain biking trails. The Royal Gorge is a quick 30 minute drive with restaurants and other fun near Canon City. The Sand Dunes are 90 minutes and Monarch Ski Area is 45, we have some of the best bird watching! Warbling Vireo, Western Wood-peewee, Cassin's Kingbird to name a few.

Camping near Florence guide

Overview

Set alongside the Arkansas River in the high desert of southern Colorado, Florence is a small town with a ton of outdoor activities nearby. There’s a kayak whitewater park right in town, fantastic mountain biking nearby in Canon City, and excellent rafting through Royal Gorge. Florence also marks the beginning of the Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway, a travel route that connects many of Colorado’s most famous Gold Rush communities. Campers will find plenty of options, including several RV parks close to town and lakeside sites at Lake Pueblo State Park.

Where to go

Pueblo

Located 45 minutes east of Florence, the city of Pueblo is a culturally diverse city with a vibrant downtown riverwalk. Pueblo offers miles of hiking and biking trails including over fourteen miles of paved trails right alongside the Arkansas River. The nearby Lake Pueblo State Park has several year-round campgrounds as well as boat, kayak, and paddleboard rentals.

Royal Gorge

Only 10 minutes from Florence, Royal Gorge is a massive 10-mile long 1,200 foot deep canyon of the Arkansas River and one of Colorado’s most popular tourist destinations. It’s a bit of a tourist trap but it’s still an amazing sight to see. There’s plenty of family-friendly activities here such as gold panning, ziplining, and via ferrata climbing and visitors can walk across the Royal Gorge Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in the U.S.

Cripple Creek

This once bustling gold rush town has maintained much of its old western character. Cripple Creek’s downtown is lined with casinos, saloons, and shops, and several gold mining tours are offered at area mines. Cripple Creek is located a little over an hour north of Florence via the Goldbelt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway, an unpaved backcountry route through some of the country’s greatest old gold rush camps. Campers will find gorgeous forested spots in Mueller State Park, thirty minutes north of Cripple Creek.

When to go

Kayaking and whitewater rafting is best on the Arkansas River from April through August. High water is the most exciting time on the river and that’s usually between late May and late June. The best time to hike, bike, and camp in Florence is from March through October. In comparison to Colorado’s high country, Florence experiences a bit more mild winter and many area campgrounds including those at Lake Pueblo State Park remain open year-round.

Florence is a pretty small town so services are few and far between. Find grocery stores, gear shops, and department stores in Cañon City, 10 miles away.
Camping at Lake Pueblo State Park is very popular in summer. Reservations are available online and over the phone up to six months in advance.
Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at outfitters in Canon City, Pueblo, and at Lake Pueblo State Park.
