Weekend Trip to WonderWoods at Rocky Gap

We stayed in the Acorn Palace. The drive in was beautiful, the cabin is meticulously cared for and thought out. The surrounding area was gorgeous and Even though it rained the day we were leaving Kristen made a big impact on my daughter allowing her to grab one of the eggs a hen had laid. I highly recommend this to families and couples that want a private retreat in a healing forest. We will be back!

Weekend Trip to WonderWoods at Rocky Gap

Wonderful, charming little place. The walk up the hill wasn't too bad, and the view is absolutely gorgeous. Located near some nice hikes around the lake. We used both the fire pit and the hot plate provided and had very little issue with either. The treehouse has a functioning AC system and windows on every wall that provide good airflow. Also fascinating was the incinerating toilet, which I had never heard of before.

The camp space was awesome, wish I had more time to explore the property. I was in for a weekend basketball tournament and this was a great way to spend the evening relaxing. I frequent many campgrounds and have to say the shower experience was almost the best. Love me a game of horseshoes as well, nice touch! Just watch for tics, as any place! Thank you TJ!

My husband and I have been on the hunt for the perfect private waterfront site for years and this is certainly the one! The spot is very clean and plenty of room to bring friends, water is calm enough to swim in and kayaks are provided, we saw so much wildlife, the sunsets are outstanding, and Elizabeth and Brandon were so kind and helpful. We can’t wait to book another trip there, it’s truly a peaceful place to be.

This is such a lovely campsite, with a view of fields and walkable paths through both fields and wooded areas, and also a creek. Julie is a wonderful host who makes us and our dogs feel at home and respects our privacy while camping on her farm. My husband and I have stayed here multiple times and will continue to return.

1 night at WonderWoods at Rocky Gap

Acorn Palace is perfection, everything you need it to be and nothing you don’t. Kristen was an incredible host, she was super flexible with my last minute travel plans and a pleasure to talk to!! I got in at around 11pm and was led up to the Palace by foot (4 wheeler was also an option), a very short walk from the parking space. The view was amazing in every direction without feeling like I needed to shut the blinds at night. I ended up hiking in the area for the whole day and stayed the following night as well. I will definitely be returning with company in the near future :)

Went back and visited early in the season this time and the experience was just as amazing. Gorgeous sunrise, lots of turtles and frogs to see. Great space, when the bathrooms needed restocking it was done almost instantly. Definitely our families favorite spot for the year!

Weekend Trip to Sleepy Hollow Campground

The a-frame cabin was very clean, easy to keep warm with the space heater, and comfortable! The campground was busy, but this was too be expected on a holiday weekend. The campsites were just much closer together than I had expected. It was nice to have a trail near by to take short walks on. The bathhouse was clean. Angela said hello as I was leaving, and she was very kind!

Sleepy Hollow was a wonderful camp for a weekend get away- especially if you're looking to spend time in the local state parks for hiking and boating without being tied to one in particular. Angela was a wonderful host and the improvements made to the campground are evident and made with love. Can't wait for our next visit!

Wow! We really enjoyed camping at Mulehalla. We stayed at site 11, and it was absolutely perfect!! This site was very secluded from the other sites and had plenty of room for us to set up camp! We brought our dog along and it was so nice for her to have some room to explore without bothering other campers! The site was very clean and perfectly mowed. The only con was that we wish there was more lighting around the bathroom area because it would get very dark at night but that’s no big deal! We would definitely stay at Mulehalla again if we are in the area. 10/10 recommend. 🤩

Wild Yough Glamping Huts

Wild Yough is located in Southern Garrett County, Maryland very close to Herrington Manor State Park, Swallows Falls State Park, and the quaint mountain village of Oakland. The property adjoins thousands of acres of Garrett State Forest and hundreds of acres of state land along the Youghiogheny River. The world class Wisp resort and Deep Creek Lake are only minutes away. “Yough” is short for Youghiogheny River a state designated wild and scenic river which runs through the heart of the property. Wild Yough Glamping huts are part of more than 350 acres of private land, most of which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails. Youghiogheny is an Algonquin word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction”, or in the case of the Yough, North toward Ohio Pyle and Pittsburgh. This section of the river is designated as a protected scenic corridor and you will feel the quiet isolation when sitting on the Crooked Butt Bench overlooking the big horseshoe bend in the river at the far back corner of our property. And if the river is low during your visit, feel free to wade across to the other side – Wild Yough owns the entire peninsula of land on the other side of the river and this is also bordered by State land.The river banks are steep on the property, but the fishing for small mouth bass is exceptional. There is a small turn around on the path just beyond Crooked Butt Bench where you can take out your canoe, kayak, or inner tubes after floating the 2+ miles from the Oakland bridge. Just be prepared to walk your water craft back up to the house or Glamping site as there is no motorized access to the river.If you like to lay on the rocks in the sun or take the kids for some wading in the river, the best place is the farthest to walk to. Take the trail to “High Bluff”, then cross the Snyder property line (Permission for trail access only – do not leave trail!), then descend down and cross the bridge across Herrington Manor Creek (a stocked trout stream!). The Dragon Inn Clearings

This privately owned large home is tucked away on 7+ acres wooded area in scenic semi-secluded neighborhood in La Plata, Charles County. Charles County was created in 1658 by an Order in Council. There was also an earlier Charles County from 1650 to 1653, sometimes referred to in historic documents as Old Charles County. In April 1865, John Wilkes Booth made his escape through Charles County after shooting President Abraham Lincoln. He was on his way to Virginia. John Wilkes Booth fled to southern Maryland, toward Zekiah Swamp. Booth entered the swamp after treatment by Dr. Samuel Mudd for the broken leg he suffered escaping Fords Theater. A black tobacco farmer guided Booth and his co-conspirator David Herold through the swamp to the home of a Confederate sympathizer, Samuel Cox. Cox led Booth and Herold to Thomas A. Jones who helped them the rest of the way through the Zekiah Swamp and across the Potomac River to Virginia. In 1926, a tornado ripped through the county leaving 17 dead (including 13 schoolchildren) and on April 28, 2002, another tornado destroyed much of downtown La Plata. In its path of destruction was our location now known as THE DRAGON INN, the house was completely torn down to its foundation and rebuild in 2003. You can see a marker stone in the brick wall near the garage. This county also has several properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Among them are Green Park and Pleasant Hill, home of the Green and Spalding Families. The Dragon Inn and its all natural wooded backyard, also known as Zekiah Swamp, is part of the Potomac River basin in Charles County, Maryland. The swamp is 21 miles (34 km) of braided stream stretching the length of Charles County and is a tributary of the Potomac River. It sits at an elevation of three feet 90.91 m) and 450 acres (180 ha) of its southern end is protected as the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area. Although the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area is primarily owned by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, it isn't managed for recreation. As a result, there are no paved public access roads, parking areas, or scenic overlooks. Nor are there marked or developed trails, picnic areas, campsites, or visitor's centers. Nonetheless, a limited level of recreational use is still possible. In connection with its Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail system, the U.S. National Park Service notes that access is possible by way of the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and SR 234 (Budds Creek Road). Traveling east from that point on SR 234, one comes to Penn's Hill Road/Allen’s Fresh Road. Following Allen's Fresh Road south at mile 23.2, there is a dirt road on the west side that leads through the swamp and woods to Allen's Fresh Run of the Wicomico River. This is suitable for driving or walking. Other sight-seeing or photo opportunities are possible with brief stops along the shoulder of SR 234 where it passes through the Natural Environment Area. Similar possibilities exist to the north on SR 6 (Charles Street) that runs between La Plata and Charlotte Hall. If you are feeling adventurous you can explore some paths, clearings and bamboo fields leading to a small creek flowing into the Zekiah Swamp Run directly from our backyard! Sleepy Hollow Campground

My father tells stories of it being filled with guests all summer long! Over the years there was few upgrades and now it's in need of a facelift. We will continue to renovate in phases it's been a labor of love, but you can still see the beauty of this rural location and enjoy the peace and quiet. Hope you enjoy your stay. Lots of trees, shade and nature. It's located near New Germany State Park, 1.5 miles by car, less than a mile by foot. The state park has a lake and hiking trails. Garrett County has so much to offer, waterfalls, lakes, hiking, skiing, Amish gifts, history, fresh air, beautiful scenery. The campground was first started in 1964 by my grandparents, we are currently completing renovations in phases.
