Once run by the state but is now managed by VAA. The beautiful Blueberry Lake campground on Thompson Pass has spectacular 360-degree mountain views. 21 sites are available (1-17 on a paved loop road) near the lake. Vault toilets and a water pump are available for use. Several sites work well as group camping sites. There are no RV hookups or pull-throughs. Pets and generators are allowed. Bring your own firewood. The McAllister cabin, at the mouth of Shoup Bay Marine State Park, is best accessed by kayak or boat. There is a narrow, tide dependent channel that leads to the inner lagoon where Moraine and Kittiwake cabins are located. Kayaks recommended for access.

This is an excellent site for a group while paying for only one site. It will fit a (50 ft max) RV (no hook-ups) or 3 cars. It has a private table (not covered) and a private fire pit at the bottom and an additional fire pit at the top. The upper part will fit several tents (4-6) but is very rocky. The breeze on the top reduces the bugs. It is not far from the toilets. It is next to the game trail and may experience traffic from other sites. Blueberry Lake State Recreation Site is located in spectacular Thompson Pass, 24 miles north of Valdez. Please confirm that you have read the description and viewed the photos of this site. Each site has pros and cons. This site can hold several tents on the plateau, which has very stunning views, is easy to get in to (because one side is along the road), and is next to the game trail which is a pro if you want to go there with your dogs easily, but may mean a little nearby foot traffic and less privacy (though there will be signs up). Maximum of 2 RVs and 2 vehicles for the two combined sites in order to leave room for parking for sites 20 and 21, which are about 100 and 200 steps up a trail, or you can pay for sites 20 and 21 and put up to 2 additional RVs or tents in the circle pull-out with 18 and 19. Please confirm that you have read the descriptions and viewed the photos of this campsite and you understand that it may become muddy in heavy rains, and it is a little distance from the bathrooms. However, it is very close to fishing and kayak put in and has covered tables with space for tents. Shoup Bay - Kittiwake Cabin
These are the highest priced public cabins around. There should be a better level of maintenance done to justify the high price charged for a public facility. The cabin handrails are rotting and are not secure. Logs need to be sealed and the yard needs to be properly trimmed, many of the bushes were cut back 1-3’ above the ground.

Shoup Bay - McAllister Cabin
The cabin is great and in a wonderful spot next to a stream. We saw an a avalanche across the bay towards the glacier in the evening. We were really hoping for a warm spot to sleep after our day on the water, but the oil stove wasn't working properly. I've stayed at over 10 different cabins in Alaska with oil stoves and this was the first one that wouldn't run consistently. The cold cabin didn't ruin the night since it stayed above freezing and the morning sun warmed us all up quickly. We would stay again.

Great location, easy access with a boat but not maintained well enough for the price. The stove doesn’t function well and hasn’t been maintained, cabin fills with exhaust and doesn’t keep the cabin as warm as it should.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 14
This is very basic and small campground, but perfect for nature lovers, because nature is why you should visit this place. Nice lake is on the one side of the camp and very dramatic mountains surrounding whole place, which makes it special. No forest, so if it is not cloudy beautiful views are from some campsites (like site 12). Also this campsite is very solitude but close to toilets so this site I find one of the best in whole camp.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 14
We stayed at Site 14 for two nights and enjoyed it quite well. The second night we arrived back from a boat tour in Valdez about 8 pm and there was a lady and dog camping on our site. She left when I asked but I think she was just trying to stay for free. The sites are a bit pricey for dry camping though.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 21
This was a nice campsite right outside of Valdez. Our site had a variety of wild berries growing in and around it. We stayed at site #21, which is the best site in my opinion as it was secluded far away from the other sites and bathroom. This site is probably not ideal for a large family or a family with kids. If you are looking for a more dispersed camping experience, this site is it! The host was super responsive, friendly and very helpful in accommodating our party due to inclement weather.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 7
Beautiful campground, I'd highly recommend it to others. This campground sits on top of Thompson Pass and is about 25miles from Valdez. Cell service is sparse, but we could get enough of a signal to stay on top of things. I lived in Valdez and Anchorage for 12 years and finally got to camp here after I was done working ... it's a must see place!

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 13
This is one of the nicest Alaska State Campgrounds we have stayed in this summer. We have been camping in site’s throughout Alaska for the last 3 months! The sites were clean, bathrooms were clean without any odors and the lake was lovely as were the views. We liked it so much we stayed 4 days.

Shoup Bay - Kittiwake Cabin
I know stuff grows like crazy down there, but there needs to be some serious pruning done to restore the. view to the bay. We did quite a bit, as you couldn’t even see the bay or glacier from the cabin, but it needs more. Ran in one of the crews doing some trimming at the McAllister cabin, but sadly was very unimpressed with their work - stuff cut off two feet above ground, all trimmings left in trail, apparently volunteer labor and boat

Awesome campground. Outhouses are clean. We brought our own fireweed but lots of folks seeking wood (we shared ours). Might be good to either stock some onsite or make it clear on web site there us none at the camp. We stayed in Site 9 for part of our stay. Great site. But tough for folks to figure out where the trail starts with our rv blocking the sign that’s set back. A sign a bit removed from the site night help. Would also help to have a sign up the hill behind site 9 because many folks that go up trail wander back down right thru site 9.

Beautiful spot, campground was clean and bathrooms on point. Wish we could have fished, our neighbors landed a dozen trout. Someone nabbed our reserved site but the campground was undersubscribed so we slotted into another. No biggie , but not sure what we would have done with no host and no cell service.

Shoup Bay - Kittiwake Cabin
This is the third time we have stated these cabins in Shoup Bay. We travel down from Fairbanks and enjoy a day or two in the Valdez area and then travel out to these cabins usually for two nights. We enjoy paddle boarding and zodiac-ing around in the bay in front of the cabins, we also hike over to the glacier and enjoy watching all of the waterfalls come down the mountain behind the cabins. we found the cabins to be comfortable and dry. We found the trail in between the cabins had been recently cleared about 8 to 10 feet wide. Just remember to bring a couple of gallons of diesel fuel for the drip stoves. Or kerosene. A wonderful In state cabin trip. Will be back to do it again.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 18
The location is beautiful and waking up by the lake was magnificent. We arrived in the evening and it was nearly impossible to see the site numbers. We were in site 18 but could not find it. It was quite frustrating. Later, on our way back out, we saw it was way before the rest of the campground. There were no clear signs anywhere. We did not have this problem at any of the other campgrounds we stayed in on this trip. Mostly I would advise the hosts to make their website descriptions a little less passive aggressive. It really created a feeling of negativity. Combined with the poor signage I would only recommend this campground because of its location.

Great campground for those wanting to be away from it all. The lakes are beautiful, the sites are all nice and mostly private. The bugs though are horrible so pack ALL the bug spray, citronella, and more. We stayed at campsite 19 which was nice but has the worst view of all the campsites. It is quite literally a giant parking lot attached to campsite 18 (which has a nice view). I would highly recommend the campground just not campsite 19. Also, the bathrooms are quite a ways away from 18, 19, 20, and 21. We had to drive or bike to get to them if we didn’t want to pee our pants.

This campsite was beautiful! There was plenty of space, and the bathrooms were well maintained. The views at this site were also incredible! We stayed at Site #1, which would have been great if we had more people who rented out the connected areas, but our neighbors were nice! It was really great to have the covered pavilion in our spot as well.

Shoup Bay - Kittiwake Cabin
This cabin is nice, kerosene stove, 4 bunks. Table for eating. Lots of clothes lines to hang wet clothes. Dry wood is always tricky to procure in Valdez. I would recommend you bring some. It is not provided with the cabin. I also would bring lots of bug repellant, bug nets, and long sleeve shirts.

Shoup Bay - McAllister Cabin
We arrived Saturday July 21 at the Macalester cabin at Shoup Bay. The brush was head high to the outhouse. We cut the brush back. As a result, the renters prior to us threw their used toilet paper under the cabin in the back. Maintenance: yeah the window screen needs replacement and windows are foggy because the seals have failed. This is the information I need to leave with the park office and hip camp. Very disappointing.

Very nice and quiet campground. Wonderful view. Only bad thing - so many mosquitos that once you open the door you have at least 5 of them inside. No fire or eating outside possible. (July 2024)
