Hawks Hideaway offers 8 campsites suitable for tents of all sizes, many of which can accommodate two or more tents (additional fees may apply). We also have a large, unfurnished teepee, and are working on a cozy, furnished country cottage. (ETA Sept 25). Large trailers and RVs are NOT allowed. Nearby activities include: bird watching, hiking, river rafting or tubing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, stargazing, and rockhounding. This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our beautiful skys. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study. We gladly welcome pets, as long as you take care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess and filling in any holes. Well mannered, friendly dogs may be unleashed from time to time. Please, PLEASE watch your small pets carefully. If you're traveling with cats, please keep them on a lead. There is a riding academy and boarding facility adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders, hikers and cyclists to travel along the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood, a pleasant 30 minute walk through lush riparian area. Hawks Hideaway is a family owned property, occupied by a 3rd and 4th generation, mother-son team. Two generations have lived and died here before us and we are proud to be the custodians of this majestic property, full of old growth, gigantic cottonwood trees. A birdwatcher, or naturalists dream. Hawks Hideaway is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde River Greenway. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Hawks Hideaway is next to many miles of wilderness. You may see or encounter wildlife of all kinds, most are harmless, some are dangerous. It is your responsibility to know the difference. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects. You are responsible for your own safety and are camping here at you own risk. Please do not interact with any wild animals. If you encounter something and need help, please reach out to us. We live on the property and are readily available.

#3 Circle of Trees @ Hawks Hideaway

96% (165)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 6 · Vehicles under 23 ft
Welcome to our cool and quiet campsite nestled between a unique semi-circle formation of 4 or 5 large Cottonwood trees. The center of the site is approx. 40' in diameter with tree ranging from 2' - 3' in diameter. The space between these trees makes this site ideal for hammocks. In addition to the main site space, there is between 10' - 20' of additional space in each direction campers may spread out in. This is one of our shadiest sites offering between 80-90% shade rating by our estimate, even over the spread out space. The dense leafy canopy in this area offers all-day shade, from early morning to evening. New leaf growth on our Cottonwood trees usually begins late March, and finishes by early April. These leaves generally start to fall in November. This site is adjacent to site #4 and is perfect when paired together. When combined, these sites form a large and private space that is the coolest and shadiest in the entire campground, with plenty of room between your group and any other campers.

#1 Three Trees @ Hawks Hideaway

96% (98)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 8 · Vehicles under 14 ft
Welcome to our spacious and open campsite situated around a line of three Cottonwood trees. This is our first campsite when entering our campground, and has excellent vehicle accessibility, with little to no overhanging branches to worry about. Site is approx. 60' in diameter with 3 Cottonwood trees ranging from 1.5' - 3.5' trunk diameter. The tight line formation of these trees makes it perfect for small to mid-size hammocks. This site is one of our closest sites to the Verde River, being approx. 500' away, or just a short 60 second walk away on our comfortable river trail. Our estimated shade rating for this site is 40-50%, with less shade in the morning and late afternoons. With careful placement, many spots in the site offer all-day shade. This is a large site, with ample to room to spread out, but as you do you will find less shade. New leaf growth on our Cottonwood trees usually begins late March, and finishes by early April. These leaves generally start to fall in November.

Riverwalk Site #7

98% (92)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 10 · Vehicles under 22 ft
Riverwalk Site #7 Welcome to our large river-adjacent campsite nestled under a truly magnificent ancient Cottonwood Tree. This tree has a full 360 degree canopy which provides all-day shade. While all of our sites are within just a short walk from the river, this campsite is a stone's throw away. You'll hear the calming trickle of the river throughout the day, accompanied by pleasant bird chirps filling the trees. On many afternoons large flocks of ducks, or sometimes geese, will arrive around at 4 - 5pm in the nearby river and begin their evening ritual, just about 150 feet away. The Verde River, the adjacent riparian greenway, and its wide abundance of animal life are the main focus of this campsite, and we're sure you will find a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Site is approx. 80 ft diameter centered around a massive Cottonwood tree with a trunk ~6 ft in diameter. Includes fire pit and 6' picnic table. Within a short walk from the campsite are two professionally maintained port-a-pottys, and a garden hose with clean cool well water.

#8 Beaverside at Hawks Hideaway

94% (55)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 10 · Vehicles under 25 ft
Beaverside Site #8 Welcome to our large Cottonwood campsite nestled close to an ever-evolving beaver dam. This campsite is spacious and cool, with the enormous tree's canopy providing all-day shade. A very low hanging branch makes this site especially fun for children of all ages. Beavers along our stretch of the Verde River have become much more active in the past 10 years or so. From 2012 to around 2019, a large and industrious beaver dam had been erected just a few hundred feet from this campsite. This dam spanned the entire river, over 200ft wide by our estimation, and heavily diverted the river flow forming many winding streams. Since then, around 2020, river flooding mostly destroyed this grand dam, but the beavers remain strong. Walking along the nearby Verde River you will find countless signs of new work to come, and a new beaver plan being put into place. On some days you will even see them working away along the riverbed. Site is approx. 80 ft diameter centered around a massive Cottonwood tree with a trunk ~6ft in diameter. Includes fire pit and 6' picnic table. Within a short walk from the campsite are two professionally maintained port-a-potties, and a garden hose with clean, cool well water.

#2 Lone Cottonwood @ Hawks Hideaway

98% (45)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 8 · Vehicles under 16 ft
Welcome to our lone Cottonwood campsite, approx. 40' in diameter around a tree 3' in diameter. This is our smallest site but offers ideal parking and space for moving vehicles. This is our only campsite with access to two different lanes of travel, allowing for maximum vehicle maneuverability, and with little to no overhanging branches to worry about. This site is great for tent camping, but is ideal for camper vans and small to mid-size travel trailers (up to ~20' maximum), or any other recreational vehicles requiring extra clearance. As with all of our campsites, full-size RV's (over 20' length) must make arrangements beforehand. We estimate the shade rating for this site to be 30-40%, being our least shady site. New leaf growth on our Cottonwood trees usually begins late March, and finishes by early April. These leaves generally start to fall in November. The site offers phenomenal views of the Arizona sky, sunset, stars, and the nearby Tuzigoot National Monument.

#6 Six Sycamores @ Hawks Hideaway

96% (38)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 12 · Vehicles under 16 ft
Welcome to our Six Sycamores private campsite! This is a large and secluded natural campsite nestled within a short few-minutes walk of the Verde River and less than a mile of Tuzigoot National Monument. This is our most spacious and desirable campsite, with ample room for several vehicles and tents. We include two large picnic tables and a large fire pit with plenty of room to gather around. Also within a very short walk of the campsite is a professionally maintained Port-a-Potty, and a garden hose offering limitless clean well water. The campsite features a unique combination of both young and ancient Sycamore trees, six individual trees in a cluster. Sycamore trees are in our opinion one of the most unique and interesting trees in all of Arizona. Especially during the fall months, there is nary a more quintessential "autumn leaf" as the majestic sycamore's. If you like autumn tones, calm natural vibes, and serene bird songs throughout the day, then this campsite would be perfect for you.A few choice examples of local activities to do on or very near to our campsite include: Bird watching, hiking, river rafting or tubing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, stargazing, and even rockhounding. This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our location. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study. The cliff walls of the Verde River offer clear and distinct sedimentary layers, and the frequent flooding of the massive sandy riverbed reveals countless undiscovered treasures. We gladly welcome pets, including horses, as long as the guests inform us of their presence, and takes care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess they may leave on the campsite. There is a professional horse-boarding field and stables adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders to follow the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood if they so desire. All of our campsites are kept clear of trash, weeds, and fallen limbs and we take pride in their presentation. Please let us know immediately if anything does not reasonably meet your expectations of a private natural campsite. Please remember that this is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde Ripparian Greenway and the Verde River. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects.

#9 Tuzigoot Tipi @ Hawks Hideaway

97% (55)
Canvas tent · Sleeps 13
Ready to get away without the hassle of pitching a tent?  Want to camp as a group in the intimacy of one big space? Need a big communal space central to several tents.  If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then the Tuzigoot Tipi is perfect for you! Our extra large, 22’ diameter heavy cotton canvas tipi has a thick vinyl tarp floor to keep you dry and protected from the elements, especially the creepy, crawly ones.  Its traditional Sioux design allows smoke from the interior burn bowl to travel up and out of your way.  In rainy or snowy weather, the exterior smoke flaps can be closed to greatly reduce moisture getting inside.  (NOTE: tipi is not completely waterproof.)  The tipi’s 9’ inner liner adds insulation to keep it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Tuzigoot Tipi is ideal for small groups who want to camp together in a fun and personal way. Campouts, slumber parties, weekend retreats, wildlife watching...we got you covered!  There is  plenty of room outside to pitch a couple tents. There is a large firepit outside the tipi along with two picnic tables and a pleasant sandy area to walk on. The tipi is almost completely surrounded by beautiful, trimmed mesquite trees that are ideal for hanging a hammock or two. (No hammocks inside please.) There is a portapotty nearby and a hose with fresh well water for washing. No other amenities are included. You will need to bring everything you need except a tent and a picnic table.
