If you've ever wondered what it might be like to camp on the moon, this is it. Completely removed from civilization and surrounded by a barren nature that is alive with the subtle presence of the universe. Seasonally, Spring wildflowers burst across the landscape. Cave paintings of Chumash Indians at Painted Rock remind us of those who lived before us. **Read on for more details.** This is our home but we love to share our life in the outback. We believe it will give you a better appreciation of life's simpler side. That being said, and to maintain the balance here at home, we'd appreciate if you keep your dogs in your car until you get to your site. Our offerings include fresh air and sunshine, amazing night sky, endless views, and plenty of space and privacy to enjoy your moments in nature. You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle. Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable. For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away. Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.** Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. A little further to the west, atop our 200 foot mesa, site 3 West is enjoys plenty of junipers for privacy and sits right on the edge overlooking the canyon, and valley to the west. Hawks and ravens enjoy playing in the breeze off the edge at this site. The night sky is incredible! This expanded campsite is similar to our simple Songdog Campsites only bigger! The shaded table area is twice as big and will accommodate 8 people easily. The Privacy is greater with the nearest campsite being 150 feet south. The site has more room for you and your friends to spread out. And last but not least, if features a campfire ring as well as a charcoal fired BBQ. It really is twice the site. Rustic and spacious. Located just down the hill from Pupdog Hill and is a great stand alone site or as an additional site if you really want to book Pupdog Hill but have a couple of extra friends with their own camping rigs and tents. If you enjoy cooking in the outdoors, there is a small Santa Maria style BBQ here. You can fit a longer RV and fully enjoy this spot. The Mesa

**Plan well ahead for this one so you don't miss out** Imagine you and 64 of your best friends and family having the whole mesa, 200 feet up from the canyon bottom, to yourselves, overlooking the Cuyama Valley and surrounding mountains. This listing covers The Barbeque, Double Fire, Sites 1-3 East, Sites 1-4 West, Grand View, and Draw Camp. That's 11 sites in total! You'll still have to keep the decibels under control and quiet down by 10 pm as we'd like to continue having great neighbors. There is no electricity at any of the sites, but we do have a small generator available to rent to light up The Barbeque so you can see what you're cooking and maybe charge a couple of phones. **Sorry no buses or long RV's will make it up to the Mesa. Length limited to 22' and no more that 4' overhang from the rear axle. ** **Some folks like to stick around. Dubbed Frank's Site for the guy who would come and stay for a couple of weeks each year and win the regional HAM Radio competitions. It was quite the set up with an array of huge antennae set smack dab in the middle of the pasture and his Army surplus tent off to the side with all of the accoutrements of radio competion at hand. He has since moved on to a property of his own, but the name has stuck and we have many happy memories. This is one of the few sites that can fit a longer RV or Toy Hauler if you come in from the west end of the property. This is a great spot for the kiddo's who are just learning to ride bicycles. Perfect Weekend at Draw Camp

Draw Camp in the Far West

Over Memorial Day Weekend, we stayed at Draw Camp in the far west and everything was perfect. We arrived at the ranch, immediately stopped by the main house, and met friendly Jim & Jenny. At the main house, they had plenty of wood + a stocked "Shop" with ice, food, camp gear... pay by leaving cash in jar or use Venmo. We ordered the "tepid tub," which was totally worth it. The toilet is a little far from this camp (esp in the dark) so you may want to bring a portable toilet with privacy tent. The picnic table is covered by s wood structure and we pitched the tent so it was in shade at times. A bit tight with the table in the center, but we managed to hang 2 hammocks. The site came with 2 lounge chairs & a large garbage can, plus potable water tap all to ourselves. Sunsets were incredible, as were the coyotes howling at night. Just note that people tend to watch the sunset near this site & can be in the way of photos. We saw all sorts of birds including a parade of quails. We originally booked this site for Valentine's earlier in the year & were able to cancel 24 hours beforehand due to a storm. Jenny was so understanding. They also send a fab email before arrival with a ton of useful info, links for things to do... we ended up never leaving camp :) Jenny was incredibly responsive through the app through both reservations for Valentine's & Memorial Days, then once on site, she was helpful, communicative, and just great. Thank you so much. We'll be back for sure!

Site 2 - Songdog West Campsites.

It was great tent camping here over Memorial Day weekend. The views from atop the hill and sunset were beautiful. There are sites nearby but it still feels private. Jen was really friendly and even offered to give us a ride up the hill on her tractor! I also appreciated the communication before arriving that included clear directions and recommendations. Seeing the night sky full of stars plus the Space X landing was amazing! Highly recommend

Jim and June are wonderful hosts! Great place to camp to unwind and love the desert views and incredible stars at night! The spots are private even though there are other campers. There is a cute honor store in the barn that has ice, snores and more! We love staying here as a quick get away! Grab a burger at the buckhorn cafe on your way to song dog!

Very quiet and great for star gazing. The setup is awesome - like you have your own personal outpost. Loved how far apart the sites were spaced -- tons of privacy, yet nice to know you have some neighbors when the coyotes howl at night. ;)

Base Camp site

Camping at Songdog feels so SPACIOUS. The land is really well taken care of and the site has all the simple things you need. Super recommend requesting a cowboy tub, that was the best treat for a sunny afternoon. And amazing hosts! We loved chatting with Jen, she is so warm and helpful. Hope to come back soon!!!!

Wellhead RV Campsite

We had 2 families come with their rv's. Our site was beautiful with a few trees for shade. I can't say enough great things about the owners of this property. They were beyond welcoming and accomidating! We found songdog ranch by doing an OHV search and thank god we did. We can't wait to return!

We had a wonderful stay at SongDog Ranch. Pupdog Hill is the perfect spot to cozy up and watch a storm roll by or enjoy a star filled sky and warm campfire. We'll be back!

High desert heaven!

Site 4 - Songdog West Campsites.

This was our first time camping in the high desert at this lovely, roomy site on a breathtaking mesa. We really appreciated the distance between each campsite which gave a more private feel to our experience. Friendly camp hosts who stayed in contact and gave helpful information leading up to our trip. We will be definitely returning in the future (maybe even getting to experience the super bloom!) .

Draw Camp in the Far West

First of all i wanted to say big thanks to the Host. I didn't get her name but the host was super duper helpful. On our 3days and 2nights stay in draw camp site, my car wouldn't start on our last day. I messaged the host and ask help if she has a car jumper, she replied promptly and after 10minutes she came in our site with a portable jumper. I was relieved when my car started. Anyhow, we really enjoyed our stay in draw camp site. My parents and wife enjoyed the sunset and the tranquility on our first night. It rained in the wee time of 3am and continued raining until the next morning. It was really a challenge on our second day because 11am it rained hail and it rained hard then the sun came up then it drizzled again after an hour. It was windy but manageable. We will definitely come back!! 😉

Draw Camp in the Far West

And I returned for a second time! Love this place with the exception of the heat! 3rd time I’m coming when the temperature is lover! Same as last time, we had trash bin and 2 chair’s provided! Picnic table, fire pit and toilet provided! Beautiful nature view all around, great for dogs to roam off leash. The owners were great as the previous time! Logs available at their ranch before hitting the campsite as well as other utilities in their little shop! Hike on the property! It’s an awesome place and I recommend it to anyone! Totally worth it. 💕 As I said the first time- I’ll be coming back when time allows it!

Such a great getaway! Easy drive from LA, quiet, clean and safe. The hosts go above and beyond, firewood etc etc. dog friendly. Was able to get my van up no problem and the views are incredible! Can’t wait to come back

Awesome Carrizo Plains Getaway

Soda Lake of Carrizo Plains

Went to this site in mid April. It was beautiful. Very remote and serene spot on a hill with great views. Lots of space to explore. Very cool scenic drive in as well. Upon arrival, we did have to bump out a group of other campers who had tried to claim the spot before we got there (which is allowed per a sign on at the site) but they were very polite and understanding about it. Would definitely recommend and am likely to go back.

Franks Site

Campsites are nicely spaced for privacy. Location is interesting: close to the Wind Wolves Preserve (for hiking/Natural History experience), Cave paintings at Painted Rock, the Carrizo Plains National Monument, and seldom visited but kitschy New Cuyama area (pay a visit to Sagebrush Annies!). Owners are welcoming and their small mercantile is in keeping with the minimalist theme. The shade pergola w/ picnic table, trash bin, spigot and private outhouse at Frank's site were welcome "upgrades".

The Barnyard

Once again, we loved camping at Songdog Ranch! Even though there were only a few springtime flowers, it is stunningly beautiful, peaceful and really cool. A little after sunset we heard at least two groups of coyotes, we saw the most beautiful rattlesnake, and it is super convenient to Carrizo Plains. The Hosts always quickly respond. The sites are very clean and well maintained.

Beautiful spot to get away

Draw Camp in the Far West

This place is perfect for getting away and relaxing. The site was clean, as were the restrooms. The host was kind and helpful and even recommended a better spot for us to camp due to our large camper van (we had booked a tight spot.) The views were outstanding and the cool breezes were wonderful. The sites are great spots for a hammock, if you’re into that. The tepid tub was amazing. I would arrive during the day to make finding your site easier, although our host drove us right to it. It’s quiet and the sites are spread out, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. We had a wonderful time and would def go back. The stargazing was phenomenal as well, although the light from the almost full moon was annoying, not that anyone has any control over that. I would recommend this ranch to my friends as they’ve done such a beautiful job there.

I keep coming back to Song Dog Ranch due to its quiet and clam camping atmosphere! It’s like you’re in another world! No campground out there that offers plenty of space to camp and neighbors are distant to where it seems you are alone in the was camp wilderness! Jim & Jenny are just the sweetest host you can have! I love that Jim always offer to give us a tour of his house to include other rental properties within the vicinity! Always great experience and always will be coming back! 😎⛺️👌🏻🏍️

Songdog Ranch is a beautiful property and overall great place to retreat and enjoy the surrounding landscape. The hosts are incredibly helpful and friendly too. There are also lots of hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities just on the property.
