Weekend Trip to Mt. Blanca Base Camp

If you like privacy and beautiful views, book now! I spent 2 amazing nights at this spot. Very large and level. Basically situate your rig to maximize the view or cut the wind. You choose. Felt super safe as a solo female traveler here. Great host directions and communication. Never saw another human, which is ALWAYS my goal. Mt Blanca is magnificent and that’s the only thing I cared about seeing, but the antelope were a great addition! Very relaxing. I didn’t even use my generator bc the weather was fair and the wind was always blowing. Easy easy boondock site!

I enjoyed my time here with my two dogs! The directions from the host were easy to follow and there was plenty of space between sites. As others mentioned, having a bug net will come in very handy.

Beautiful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (Mt. Lindsey, Blanca Peak, and Little Bear Peak to the north, especially)! Not much cover with low trees & sage brush, but this site offers stunning views of the San Luis Valley and surrounding area. Just 25 minutes from the Great Sand Dunes and Alamosa, CO. 1 night at Rabbit Hole Ranch

It was exactly what we needed. We stayed for one night and were welcomed by our two four legged hosts, Kaylee and Finn 🐾! When my daughter and I arrived, a storm was brewing in the distance, but then a beautiful rainbow 🌈 appeared, creating a stunning view. The location was easy to find, even though it was a bit farther than I had expected from the sand dunes. Still, it was perfect and so peaceful.

My family of 4 + a dog loved our stay! It was a bit squishy as you would expect fitting a family of 4+ in a tiny home...but it was cozy! Comfortable beds all around and the means for making coffee. :) But the absolute best part was the DECK! Gorgeous views. Great birding! Great place to drink said coffee. This was a perfect stay for us on a trip to the Great Sand Dunes. Also, excellent communication with the host.

Lil Buddha was a gem within a gem! A trailer that’s all you need for coziness, a bed and shelf, on land graced by mt Blanca and all the touches those working the land have added. Such wholesome ways to breathe in the forest there, especially walking outside in middle of the night to stargaze and see all the dancing solar lights on the ground.. illuminating the wild irises and flora.

This was such a beautiful stay. My boyfriend and I stayed here on a cross country road trip, and we felt so rested and rejuvenated. The bathrooms and showers are so cool and well made. The kitchen is also amazing, it was fully decked out and had all sorts of spices and pots and pans— it made our breakfast so much easier! We loved hearing all the wildlife and being in such a beautiful secluded area!

Beautiful serene place in the mountains. The hosts a very attentive and the environment is wonderful. The community kitchen is so helpful.

2 nights at High Peaks Campground

This was one of the coolest camping spots we’ve ever stayed at. We happened to be the only campers on the property the first night and stayed at tent site 17. The second night another set of campers joined but they were far enough away that we couldn’t hear them. We had a camper van as well as a truck with teardrop camper and there was plenty of room at tent site 17. The campground is out in the middle of nowhere. You can see the great sand dunes way off in the distance which is cool and you can’t beat the star gazing. Luckily we were the only folks at the campground. You can definitely see other campers on the campground (if there had been some) as there’s no trees or anything between the sites. They are spaced far enough apart though. Would recommend if you want beautiful views of the sky.

We were unlucky with the weather the one night we were here (wind and thunderstorms) but the site was nice and the host even left us some firewood (which we couldn't use due to the aforementioned weather). The highway notwithstanding, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful, but to be honest, the nearest dwelling having a billboard sized Trump sign painted on the side of it kind of soured the mood.

This place was perfect for our group! The view was unbeatable, the site was clean and well maintained, the host was communicative, and the dogs were so incredibly sweet. Very close to the sand dunes entrance as well!

We loved how much detail and care was put into this tiny home! It had everything we needed (except for hot water) to have a restful stay near the sand dunes! The property is very secluded so the star viewing at night was optimal! Would definitely stay here again.

Really secluded, quiet spot with great view of the mountains. Really enjoyed our stay there. It's easy enough to access in our 32 foot rig but you do need to go pretty slow on the washboard gravel road leading up to the dirt road to the property. Just take it slow and you'll be fine.

You will be the ONLY ONE on 5 acres of land that you are welcome to explore. Find yourself adventuring through the gulch, relaxing under the shade of the beautiful pinon trees, or high up on the hilltop swinging on the tree swing and enjoying the fresh breeze. At night, you may find that the views of the night sky are simply unbeatable, so don't forget to look up once you put your fire out! If no rain is expected, leave your tent fly off and gaze at the stars. On a clear night, I can guarantee you’ll see at least one shooting star at this beautiful spot! Not to mention, the sunrise and sunsets are beautiful too! Walk to the top of one of the many peaks on the property to see views for days. Adventure to the highest peak and be surprised with a tree swing! If you can, take a panoramic photo while you’re up there! To make things even better, there are three firepits on the property with campsites to go along with them. Camp at any site you prefer! There's parking for 2 cars in the front of the lot and one car directly next to the site. HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLES ONLY! Otherwise you will not be able to pull into the driveway. A Jeep Patriot can barely make it up the small hill. This land is located in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. You will be just minutes away from so many awesome destinations! You'll find reception increases the closer you get to Fort Garland. Fires are welcome in the designated fire rings ONLY. If there is a fire ban in place, please follow the law for your personal safety. There are plenty of fallen branches and dead limbs on the property, please feel free to use any remaining cut wood, fallen branches, and/or dead trees, but NO CUTTING BRANCHES NOR TREES DOWN. Secluded San Luis Valley Campsite

5 off-grid acres down the road from Great Sand Dunes National Park! The property will be marked with painted sticks, spaced about 30ft apart from one another. You will need to access the property by turning onto Highway 150, then a left onto 3rd St. Next, take the first right onto Ash St, then the first right onto 4th St. Go down the road and locate our property on the left side of the road. The approximate coordinates for the front of our lot are 37.4932, -105.6076. We recommend using Google Maps to get there. Apple Maps does not do as well with coordinates. Feel free to take your vehicle off the driveway, just be mindful of our land! There will also be a fire pit for your convenience, but do not leave any trash or food after you leave. Please make sure to put out all fires completely. Even though this is primarily a Tent site, RVs and Campers are welcome. However, there is no electricity or any water hookups on the property, but the views and privacy make up for it! You are about 15 minutes south of the Great Sand Dunes and 20 minutes from downtown Alamosa.

Alamosa, the largest town in the SLV, is just 20 minutes away. With a population of around 9,800 Alamosa has that small town feel and has the goods and services you will need. Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies. On holidays, however, expect it to be busy. Our two Great Pyrenees are here to help keep you and your pets (and our chickens) safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with all three of our dogs. This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, his name is TheoVon and he is huge! Returning this season is KayLee also a GP and and Finn, who is a little Benji lookin rescue from Alaska who just LOVES everyone. :) Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm. The surrounding valley has lots to offer from the quant little towns and coffee shops to the home style meals at the restaurants. and all the hot springs are amazing. Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching. New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable. ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST. No fireworks are permitted at any time.

The Sangre de Cristo Range in Colorado contains the following 14ers: Blanca Peak, Challenger Point, Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Culebra Peak, Ellingwood Point, Humboldt Peak, Kit Carson Peak, Mount Lindsey, and Little Bear Peak. History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years. In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing! My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all! You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. Coyote Canyon Mountain Base Camp

As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive. The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared. There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land. Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills. Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig. There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet. Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land. If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

The surrounding valley has lots to offer from the quant little towns and coffee shops to the home style meals at the restaurants. and all the hot springs are amazing. Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching. New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable. ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST. No fireworks are permitted at any time.

Mountain Road Disclosure: The Sheep Mountain property it’s located in a mountainous area. There are 7 miles of dirt and mountainous roads from the highway to the property. Although the dirt roads are maintained there may be grooves and ruts in some areas due to weather. Please be advise that trucks and four-wheel vehicles will have a much easier time navigating these roads. Other vehicles may need to slow down and take it easy through some potentially rough areas. PROPERTY UPDATE: DUE TO THE RECENT WIND STORM, SOME TREES WERE UPROOTED AND BLOWN OVER ON THE PROPERTY. TREES WERE REMOVE FROM THE ROAD AND CAMP SITES. SOME ARE STILL DOWN IN THE AREA. The Scott Ranch

Welcome to the Scott Ranch located 10 minutes east of South Fork, CO. Our ranch is easily accessible via a flat, state-maintained road, just seconds off Highway 160. Our family purchased the ranch a couple years ago. We are native Coloradoans who are interested in conservation. The Scott Ranch is a 147 acre, conserved ranch and boasts some of the most beautiful riparian grassland in the valley. We have hundreds of tall cottonwoods bordering 7/10th mile of private, gold medal water on the Rio Grande river. There are literally thousands of species of plants and animals on the property. Come enjoy the incredible sunset views from the firepit perched high above the large pond and be prepared for one the best stargazing experiences in the valley! Please know that we are not an RV park, nor do we want to be. We have only three sites overlooking the lower river corridor. This is intentional because we want your experience to be focused on the beauty of the ranch. The sites are flat and relatively private. Each site is 26x80 (easy pull through) with individual access to power (50 amp, 30 amp and 110 outlet) and water. There is common area that includes a large firepit for you enjoyment. You also have immediate access to a septic system station next to the sites, at your convenience. The Scott ranch is a working ranch. The lower corridor of the ranch will have livestock (cattle) grazing for several weeks out of the year. (Calving season is adorable!) For insurance reasons, guest access to the lower pastures and river corridor -- defined as any part of the ranch beyond the RV sites -- is only allowed through a separate reservation. If you are interested fly fishing our gold medal waters or simply want to explore the ranch's forest and pastures, please book an RV site first. Access is foot traffic only and is 75$ per person per day, unless otherwise arranged. It's first come first serve, limited to one small group per day, and arranged separately after the RV reservation is paid. We are also next to the elk migration crossing, so you could see elk, deer, pronghorns, or even get a visit from one of the wild horse packs in the valley! This is a great location if you want to be close to things, but feel like you're far away! Lots of athletes come to this area to train at the higher altitude! Visit the town of San Luis (the oldest town in Colorado), hop over to Antonito and check out the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic railroad, hit the UFO tower in Hooper, or just lounge on your campsite and get the best view of the Milky Way you've ever seen! Camping near Alamosa guide

Overview

Experience a new side of Colorado when you camp near Alamosa. From the San Luis Valley, you're just minutes from dense forests and rolling sand dunes just begging to be explored.

It's easy to get stoked about Great Sand Dunes National Park. Outdoor lovers come from across the country to see the jaw-dropping dune field that covers 30 square miles. Hike the tallest dunes on the continent—the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Blanca Peak are worth the climb.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try sandboarding or sand sledding down the dunes. (Get your rental gear in Alamosa). Afterward, cool down in refreshing Medano Creek. After a day in the dunes, pitch a tent on the sand—all you need is a backpacking permit. The park also boasts a developed campground, Pinon Flats.

Keep in mind the dunes can get swamped in the summer. For a less crowded alternative, check out San Luis Lake State Park. The secluded campground has RV sites and tent sites but remember to BYOW (bring your own wood).

For stunning views of the dune field, Zapata Falls Campground is your best bet. This rustic state camping area's 9,000-foot elevation promises sweeping vistas of rugged Colorado terrain. Keep in mind all sites are first-come, first-served.

On the other side of Alamosa, you find Rio Grande National Forest. Here, you can enjoy hiking trails and tent camping amid densely wooded hills. You can even catch some dinner at Terrace Reservoir.

Around Alamosa, a huge range of RV parks, rustic tent camps, and decked out cabins are available. Some are just steps from the Rio Grande, which cuts through the city. Whatever your camping style, it's easy to find the perfect spot within minutes of the area's state and national parks.

Wondering when to plan your trip? With its cool winters and mild summers, Alamosa draws campers year round. Visit in January to explore snow-dusted dunes, or get here in August for some of the best starry skies in south central Colorado.
