Weekend Trip to The Haven

There was a little mix up with Hipcamp overbooking, but Kat was very flexible and still had a spot for us to settle in! It was a very nice space to spend the weekend, and the river was great for kayaking and fishing.

We absolutely loved our experience tent camping on Earl and Lisa’s land! They were incredibly kind and communicative, very quick to reply to messages and accommodated us last minute too! The bathroom was very nice and clean, and it was one of the quieter campsites we’ve stayed at. We felt very safe and comfortable here. We were grateful that they welcomed our dog too as that can be tough to find. Highly recommend if you’re in the area! Thanks again Earl and Lisa!

Earl & Lisa are wonderfully warm hosts with a beautiful property! It truly feels like a getaway with spaced out camp sites, also a pretty pond filled with fish, ducks, chickens, and plenty of other wildlife to enjoy. Their bath facilities are nice and well kept, and the firewood they provide for your site is plentiful. Definitely recommend!

Titus has created a thoughtful and lovely spot to camp. The areas are private and well designed, the facilities clean and charming, with generous details like the use of clean towels if you forget yours. I loved the variety of trees , the sound of the horse and buggies on the distant road, the welcoming sheep. Thank you Titus!

This was a wonderful overnight trip with my three year old for his first camp-out. Julie and Madison provided excellent hospitality and communication. The animals were a big hit and we got to hold, feed and play with several of them. The grounds were well kept and the yurt was spacious and clean. Some really nice touches with the welcome basket, firewood on site and comfy camp chairs. And I can’t express how much I appreciate the cleanliness of the outhouse—especially with a toddler!

Annie and Jonathan were the kindest hosts (LGBTQ friendly 💗) with an amazing property! The site is extremely private and tucked back in the woods, the hosts were amazing and hauled our equipment on their tractor to and from the site. The bathroom is a short walk away from the site and was very clean. Highlight of the trip was the mini pig Kevin Bacon, Pearl the puppy, and Chicky Minaj the chicken. We will absolutely be back for camping again!

We had a great time staying at Sleek acres. Lisa and Earl put a lot of work into their property to ensure campers enjoy their experience and it is clear they take pride in both the property and hosting campers. They truly went above and beyond to ensure we felt welcomed and had what we needed to be comfortable. The campsites are clean and flat and despite some recent rain the ground wasn’t muddy or flooded—perfect for setting up camp. The property is a working homestead, definitely get some eggs for breakfast and ask to feed the fish. This camping experience was the highlight of our trip.

Pretty cozy. Nice view on the pond. Bathroom clean. The owners provided firewood (thanks!!). Quite spacious and the fire pit is very nice. Had a late check in and were still super well welcomed. Just watch out for the tics.

For a total of 13 options. 2Chicks And A Farm is a small working farm on 20 acres, owned and run by Julie and Theresa Graham. We are 13 minutes from South Haven and the lake. 30 minutes from the city of Kalamazoo. And just under an hour from Grand Rapids. About half of the 20 acres is wooded, which is where three of our camp sites, Hammock Haven are located. Each site has a fire ring & picnic table. One site, capable of taking a mid sized RV / Fifth Wheel, is located on the front of the property with easy access from the road. It backs up to some trails and brush/wood area and has a corn field to the right. So, even though on the front on the property, you have a feeling of privacy. It too has a fire pit and picnic table. Three camp sites are located in the pasture. One is at the bottom of the pasture (1) and quite open. It can accommodate larger groups with multiple tents. A more secluded site (5) is half open and half in light woods., and is located at the top of the pasture. The others are in the middle of the pasture, 2 for sun lovers and 3 for those who prefer more shade. For those who prefer more seclusion, we have cleared three sites in the woods. All sites have a fire ring, or metal fire pit, and picnic table. Some have fire wood boxes (we’re working on making a box for all sites). We have an outdoor propane shower that provides both hot and cold water. This is free. A coffee bar is on the back deck. Coffee is brewing around 7am. We also provide hot water, teas, hot chocolate and cider. Feeling a little peckish before breakfast, or after dinner? Help yourself to a snack. This is all free, though small donations are welcomed. Our goats, poultry, pigs, rabbits, cats and dogs and produce take up about an acre and a half. Then the rest is open space. You are welcome to collect eggs for breakfast and fresh produce from our gardens (additional fee). Use the BBQ or smoker. And even join in on farm chores if you are so inclined. Please try to plan to check-in by 9pm. Exceptions can be made. There are locally mandated quiet hours (10-7 Sun through Thur, and 11-7 Fri and Sat). Hanging out by a fire and chatting is fine.

Sleek Acres is a total of 13 acres, which includes our homestead, our chicken yard and barn, a fishing pond, and over 8 secluded acres to the back of the property where guests can explore (including walking trails). A small group of ducks live on the pond and will happily greet you as you walk to the beach. The Mannex! Indiana Dunes Nat'l Pk

The Man's Annex aka the Mannex is located on Scenic US HWY 12 to the South and The South Shore Commuter Rail to the North. The campsite is very clean, tidy and safe. The main pebble parking area slopes gently to the North so you will want levelers if you're in a camper. I have a brand new RV Pedestal complete with 50 and 30amp service, a mechanical timer for the LED lights encompassing the parking area as well as a rheostat so you can dim the lights. I have a 40" firepit with spark arrestor (please use to be in compliance with local laws) as well as a polywood octagonal picnic table and well water with 100' hose. Trash and human waste is to be carried out. Please keep your camper to the east of the blue and yellow birdhouses as access to the building is needed. Tent campers can pitch a tent on the grassy area east of the fire pit or anywhere in the woods. The location is great! You're inside the dunes national park and only 1.35 miles to the beach. Just north of the train tracks is the Calumet bike path. .35 to the west is a gas station with a bathroom, the south shore train station (day trip to Chicago anyone?), a great restaurant and liquor store as well. Bikes are HIGHLY recommended to be able to help facilitate your exploring of this very unique part of the country. If you're a birder and you don't already know, bring your binocs, this is one of the best birding towns in the Midwest / country due to the location and it's biodiversity.

What to expect lodging at Mustang Sally's: Mustang Sally's offers glamping sites, primitive camping sites and small camper sites. In the future, the plan is to add RV sites and full service cabin sites. The most common question is "What is Glamping?" Well, glamping is glorified camping. Glamping has real beds and other comforts of home but in the camping setting. Non-Glamping sites are available for tents, pop-ups, trucks & van camping. Motorhomes are not allowed at this time. The goal is by end of summer to have tree height cleared in main driveway to allow clearance for RV/Motorhomes. Currently there are no shower facilities as of May 2024. Outhouses are available. Mustang is currently working on what will be called "Bath Row" with the plan of them being finished by July 1, 2024. Bath row will consist of 10 restroom units. Each unit will have it's own private toliet, shower and changing area. Camp Fires are allowed within the fire rings provided at each camp site. Please keep them under control and make sure they are totally out before leaving the camp site. Check in time is 3pm EST Check out is 11am EST. Quiet time is 10 PM to 7 AM Trash cans are located throughout the park. Please tie trash bags completely closed and put your trash completely in the trash container. If the first can is full, please find another container. Please do not place your trash on the ground. Possums and racoons are attracted to left out or disposed of food and while we think they are cute and wonderful animals, we don’t want you to find a surprise in the night of a visiting racoon at your site because of incorrectly disposed of trash! Feel free to bring your own bike. Riding bicycles on our main entrance road is prohibited for the safety of your children and our incoming guests. You are able to ride them everywhere else on the property, just not the main driveway. Cancelling your reservation on the day of or within 7 days prior to arrival will result in no refund. Cancelling your reservation 8 to 14 days prior to arrival, you will be refunded half of your total stay. Cancellations 15 or more days will receive a full refund minus a $15 processing fee. There will be no refunds after you have checked in, for inclement weather, failure to follow the Rules & Regulations, or disorderly conduct. Overview

A charming city set in northern Indiana on the St. Joseph River, Mishawaka is known as the “Peppermint Capital of the World” due to the area’s large quantities of mint. There are also 29 parks, golf courses, and an olympic-size public swimming pool for campers to enjoy. Road trip to Chicago—just under two hours away—to indulge in delicious pizza, or hitch up the speed boat and roll the RV into a full-service, pet-friendly, waterfront campground in Harrison Lake State Park. Tent camping near Potato Creek State Park offers local swimming and water activities in Worster Lake.

Chicago Surrounds

Head two hours west of Mishawaka to Chicago for a traditional slice of deep-dish pizza, renowned architecture, and a legendary jazz scene. Rent a kayak and explore the Chicago River, or explore 26 miles of lakefront with dozens of sandy beach spots surrounding Lake Michigan. Nearby are plenty of full-service RV campgrounds featuring shower facilities and flush toilets.

Harrison Lake State Park

Hunt waterfowl, take a swim, or catch fresh fish for dinner at Harrison Lake State Park. Just over the state border in Ohio, Harrison Lake State Park is roughly two hours east of Mishawaka. Scoop up a lakefront cabin for easy access to waterfront activities including the 150-foot beach. A launch ramp is available for motorized boats, or rent a pedal boat, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or power boat instead. Book reservations online up to six months in advance to get a pet-friendly campsite that offers electricity. Winter camping is also available and is great for sledding at the east end of the lake, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing.

Potato Creek State Park

With a 327-acre lake surrounded by forests and wetland areas, Potato Creek State Park delivers plenty of outdoor activities. Stop by the Nature Center to learn about the area before biking the paved 3.2-mile trail. Cross-country skiing, snow tubing, and ice fishing are popular in winter, while fishing on one of the three piers on Worster Lake is a huge draw in summer. Rent a cabin nearby or pitch a tent in an off-grid campsite to get first dibs on canoe, kayak, and rowboat rentals.

When to go

Mishawaka offers four distinct seasons and outdoor activities that are popular year-round. Freezing temperatures in December, January, and February create great conditions for cross-country skiing and ice fishing. June, July, and August see the highest temperatures of the year—around 77°F—for water activities and hiking. The off-seasons run from March until May and from September until late November, with smaller crowds and cooler weather.
