Hideout Mountain Lodge is a peaceful retreat tucked away in the hills of Santa Ysabel, just over an hour from San Diego and a couple of hours from Los Angeles. Spread across 40 acres, the property offers a variety of places to stay — from remodeled cabins with fireplaces and private decks, to vintage trailers, campsites, and RV spots with full hookups and views of Lake Henshaw. This is the kind of place where you slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the landscape. Guests gather around the community firepit, take walks through the oaks, or just relax on a porch and listen to the birds. On weekends, you can wander over to Josie’s Hideout Saloon, our on-site bar and restaurant, known for its live music and western character. We’re just a few minutes from the towns of Santa Ysabel and Julian, easy to get to but far enough away to feel like an escape.

The Cove#1: OakTree Shaded Campsite

Welcome to The Cove, an amazing shaded campsite nestled under a canopy of oak trees. There is enough room for 4 separate 21'x17' campsites comprising the 82' x 17' area (just under 1400 sq ft). But we are limiting the number of separate bookings to just 2 (with maximum of 4 people per site for privacy reasons). We believe in the WOW experience which includes lots of space in nature. However... . . Do you have a large group of campers? You can book the entire Cove area which can probably handle up to around 40 people. PLEASE NOTE: For privacy reasons, if booking only one site, there is a maximum of 4 campers. If you’re coming with more than 4 people, you will need to book the entire Cove - to do this you’ll need to book both sites separately indicating the amount of people that would stay on each site. For example, if you have a total of 7 people you’ll book one site with 4 and other with 3. The buyout fee is the greater of the per camper fee (up to 40) with a minimum of 8 people. For example, if you just want 2 people and guarantee privacy for the whole area, just pay for both sites to a total of 8 people. (The Cove is pretty inexpensive). San Diego Mountain Lodge has multiple camping areas with two locations with electrical outlets, outdoor heated showers, sink, AND outdoor flushing toilets. Both shower locations are just a nearby stroll from The Cove. The preferred showers and bathroom for The Cove is just down the steps from The Crossing campground (next to The Cove) and towards Josie's Hideout Bar & Restaurant. Each Cove site has it's own fire pit. There is a hose attached to Cabin 9 nearby, please make sure to completely extinguish the flames when you are done with the fire. The Cove can accommodate a few cars but you can drop off gear, and parking is nearby (about 50 yards away down the road). NOTE: On Saturday and Sunday afternoons you will hear live music and motorcycle noise until about 4pm and the bar closes between 5-6pm. IMPORTANT: Have Fun. Be safe. Again, when using the fire pit, make sure you put it out with the hose attached to Cabin 9 before leaving the fire pit unattended.

Welcome to one of our campsites at Hideout Mountain Lodge! This large terraced camp area called Josie's Backyard Campground has plenty of space to sprawl out and set up camp (No camping next to your car, since this site doesn’t have car access. Parking is located a few steps away, so you couldn’t park next to your tent on this site or come with a rooftop tent, you’d need to book one of our other listings). Located within a Dark Sky Community, the star gazing is unparalleled. Amenities include hot showers, sink, flushing toilets, picnic tables, and BBQ. The camp area is located above our on site restaurant, Josie's Hideout Saloon (open Friday-Saturday 11am-6pm, Sunday, 11am-5pm). On Saturday and Sunday families, tourists, locals, and motorcyclists from all over the world frequent the restaurant to enjoy live music, typically begining around 12pm until 3pm. A note before booking: Since this site is located near the saloon, it’s not completely private (guests might come and go close to it) and you’ll likely hear live music, friendly chatter, and the occasional rumble of motorcycles while the bar is open. It all wraps up around 5PM, but if you’re seeking total quiet during those hours, this may not be the best fit. If you're up for a vibrant atmosphere with peace returning by sunset, you’ll love it here!

Welcome to The Lower Campground, a stunning campsite nestled at the edge of the mountains, offering breathtaking views of Lake Henshaw. There is enough room for 4 separate 21'x17' campsites comprising the 82' x 17' area (just under 1400 sq ft). The Lower Campground can accommodate only a few cars but you can drop off gear, and there is more parking nearby (about 50 yards away down the road). NOTE: On Saturday and Sunday afternoons you will hear live music and motorcycle noise until about 4pm and the bar closes between 5-6pm.

Site #15 is located next to Sites #14 and #16 ‘The Amphitheater’. If you want to come with more than 4 people, you need to book Site #14 as well, to provide privacy for all guests. VIEWS: #14 has great views, #15 has superb views. #16 is just past the other two sites and has the most unbelievable views on the entire 35 acre property. Site #16 is also the largest of the 3 view sites, and is the most secluded. You’ll see why it’s called The Amphitheater. VEHICLES and PARKING: Campsites #14 and #15 are very similar in size. Both can only handle 1 vehicle (up to 25'). Campsite #16 can handle 2 vehicles (one up to 30’). The Crossing is positioned between our Cabins and Josie’s Hideout Restaurant and Bar (at street level below). The Crossing offers a private and distinctive camping experience for RV and camping enthusiasts on a 2400 sq ft area (100’ x 24’) surrounded by towering oak trees with 2 sets of hookups. NOTICE: On weekend days (from 11am until about 5pm) you will hear the music and the noise from the bar/restaurant. We recommend joining in on the fun at Josie’s. The Crossing has 2 outdoor heated showers conveniently located down some steps. There are two outdoor bathrooms with flushing toilets located further down some additional steps on the outdoor patio of Josie’s Hideout Restaurant. The Crossing is a private area that is adjacent to the Cove which is a canopy of giant oak trees. There are no lake views. Near the entrance there is parking for additional vehicles. Located closest to the top of Hideout Mountain, the backdrop of breathtaking views of Lake Henshaw and the surrounding SD Mountain Range will leave you awe inspired. Staying in a little camper has never looked this cool or been this easy! Simply drive-up, park your car and immerse yourself in nature at the San Diego Mountain Lodge. With a full kitchen, huge private patio space equipped with a BBQ, picnic table & bar height table. To set the nighttime vibe we have a fire pit and string lights. The Real Teal is a pet-free stationary camper with a full-size bed. There is a bathroom with a flushing toilet inside the trailer and an outdoor shower with hot water just steps away. There is also a park-style charcoal BBQ and a fire pit. There is a 10 ft long bar height counter to hang out at and take in the spectacular views. One parking spot available for any size vehicle. Cabin #4, like all our cabins, has been completely remodeled. It is nestled on a hill with some of the best valley views around! The duplex cabin is stylishly furnished and has a shared large porch with cabin #3. It also has its own patio furniture, a wood-burning stove, mini-fridge, 40" flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, microwave, Keurig coffee machine with pods, cream & sugar included, recessed lighting, ceiling fan and an AC/heater to make your stay even more comfortable. This is the perfect duplex for a family of four! The kids can do their thing in Cabin #4 while mom and dad can kick it old school next door in Cabin #3! So close, yet NOT so far enough away? Don't worry, we can get you set up in a little larger, more private cabin elsewhere on the property! Sorry kids, one day you'll understand! Speaking of understanding...we knew if we built it, they would come! This cabin is one of 11 to choose from at the San Diego Mountain Lodge located at Hideout Mountain- a boutique retreat destination on 40 acres of unspoiled nature with an unbelievably cool, one-of-a-kind historic bar and grill called Josie’s Hideout Saloon. And once night falls, keep your other ear peeled for our local pack of coyotes while you star gaze under some of the darkest skies in San Diego County! We're also very proud to be a birder's paradise with more woodland birds here than you can shake a stick at! How about a chance to see (and hear!) turkeys, owls, scrub jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, hawks, vultures and even the Western Tanager to name a few! Stroll the grounds and let us know what you discover! We love to encourage our guests to unplug and unwind, but in case you want to Netflix and chill, we have all the modern comforts of home covered here too. Before you turn in for the night, don't forget there is a community fire pit down by Josie's Backyard to enjoy the incredible night sky, while offering the perfect place to meet other interesting guests and enjoy a nightcap after a fulfilling day of local activities with your friends and loved ones. Firewood may be available for purchase on site, otherwise Lake Henshaw is your closest market for anything you might need. If Lake Henshaw is closed, try Santa Ysabel Roadside, down the 79 going back towards the town of Santa Ysabel. They're a well-stocked convenience store that stays open till 9 on the weekdays and 10 on Fri./Sat. The duplex cabin is spacious, yet stylishly furnished and has a shared large porch with cabin #5. It also has its own patio furniture, a wood-burning stove, full-size fridge and fully-loaded kitchen complete with granite countertops, a 40" flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, microwave, Keurig coffee machine with pods, creamer, and sugar included, recessed lighting, ceiling fan and an AC/heater to make your stay even more comfortable. This is the perfect duplex for a larger family of four! The kids can do their thing in Cabin #5, while mom and dad can kick it old school next door in Cabin #6! So close, yet so NOT far enough away? Don't worry, we can get you set up in a much larger, more private cabin elsewhere on the property! Sorry kids, one day you'll understand! RV Campsite #1 - The Crossing
We were looking for someplace to stay locally for a holiday getaway, and when we found that the site was nearby to Josie's Hideout we knew where we wanted to stay. The Crossing description was accurately described. It does not have a view of the lake, but the trees all around were lovely to take in nature. There were many birds flying around and it was wonderful to sit back and relax and watch nature around us. There is a fire ring and a sturdy table available. The site is ample and easy to park our trailer into. The nice part about this specific site is we were able to sit in the shade behind the table and listen to the band playing at Josie's Hideout. The band faces away from the campsite, but the audio was surprisingly clear so we could be in our own chairs while enjoying the band of the day. Julian is about a half hour down the road and is a fantastic town to shop in antique stores and get their famous pies. We hiked up to The Perch, and while the posting says there's no potable water, there was water up there (not sure if it's drinkable). The views from that site are phenominal and the road up to the site is paved better than the Crossing. However, I don't think that you'd be able to hear the music as well and it isn't as easy to walk down to the bar. There are pros and cons to both sites. I'd stay at either site in the future.

Lower Campground - Amazing views!
Loved the view! The space was easy to find. My only issue was that the path to go up to the bathroom was steeper and slippier than I had expected. I would totally go back but I am probably going to choose one of the upper sites instead.

The Perch - RV Parking
The perch was a stellar view. We were the only ones to book out of four open spots which was ideal because we had full access to the site’s campfire ring and lookout point. It was strange that many other campers from tent spots down the hill came to the lookout and stayed for hours at points… I guess my point is, there may be other people around even if you’re the only one to have booked the Perch area.

I took my son to San Diego to visit the college he will be attending next fall. We decided to stay in a campground. After researching for a while, we decided on Josie’s Mountain Top Hideout. Great location, amazing views, firm, but comfortable bed and great, peaceful atmosphere. We had a great time.

We really enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back and check out other sites or the cabins. Pros: Beautiful, beautiful views around the campground and nearby. Easy to access! Bathrooms, showers and dumpsters on the property. Josie’s hideout was a fun spot to listen to music and grab a bite/drink. The camp host, Francisco was very kind and helpful! He had even invited us to a group meditation he had planned for campers. Cons: We booked the Josie’s backyard spot and were told 2 other groups were coming to share the space - it ended up only being one other group but there’s not a ton of privacy to be sharing the space with other groups and the other group setup in a walkway and nearby our tent, which we had setup tucked away. Luckily they moved but it was a bit ‘awkward’ being so close by. Perhaps marking spaces for multiple groups would help to avoid any awkwardness for future campers! This site is also near the road which we could hear cars driving by throughout the night. Overall, we really enjoyed our time and would love to come back to check out different sites on the property.

The Cove#1: OakTree Shaded Campsite
I had the pleasure of discovering Hideout Mountain Lodge during a break between work assignments, and it turned out to be such a delightful getaway. I was impressed by the variety of accommodation options available, from camping spots to RV and cabin rentals, all with incredibly scenic views. Initially, I had planned to camp for my entire stay. However, the weather took an unexpected turn with cold temperatures and rain on my last night. The lodge staff were exceptionally kind and offered me a cabin at a discounted rate, which I truly appreciated. I'm already looking forward to a future visit to Hideout Mountain Lodge and hope to bring along some friends and/or family next time to share the experience.

RV Campsite #1 - The Crossing
Great weekend at the hideout! We stayed at campsite number one. Francisco, our camp host was there when we checked in we were able to back into the spot without any issues. There is definitely a grade so when leveling your trailer bring extra leveling blocks for height. We went down to Josie’s for lunch on Saturday and enjoyed some music and a delicious tri-tip sandwich. Hiking nearby is fantastic as well. Highly recommend!

I had an amazing stay at this campground and will definitely be coming back! The site was incredibly clean and peaceful—exactly what I was looking for. The toilet was well-maintained, and although the hot water heater for the outdoor shower wasn’t working during my stay, I still enjoyed a brisk navy shower. There’s something refreshing about showering outdoors, and I actually loved it. The view from the top of the site was stunning, with a sweeping overlook of the valley that made mornings and sunsets extra special. At night, the distant sound of cows mooing added a unique and calming touch to the experience—felt totally immersed in nature. There were some really thoughtful touches around the campground too, like string lights, a cozy hammock, and a tire swing that gave the place a fun, homey vibe. I do wish they sold firewood bundles down at the saloon—it would’ve made campfires easier to plan. But other than that, the site had everything I needed. The shade here is also perfect, and I imagine it would be ideal for summer camping. Can’t wait to return!

There are many things to love. The view on the Perch is spectacular, wide open yet secret and intimate. The restaurant/bar down the hill has some fun music and is a good place to hang out. The location is just minutes away from Julian so we can hop into town when we want. We love it, our dogs love it. We will come back when we need to escape just for a couple of nights.

Lower Campground - Amazing views!
My daughter and I were excited for this tent camping adventure. It was a lovely spot, and even with the cold temps, it was a gorgeous place to wake up. The signs were clearly marked, the toilet was clean, and the camp site was well kept. I highly recommend a stay here!

The Cove#1: OakTree Shaded Campsite
The place is very well kept and we enjoyed being away the peace of being away from the city for a bit. We loved the view at the top of the short hike and how clean everything was. This was a first time camping at the Hideout but definitely won’t be the last.

This was our 3rd time here! First was in a cabin, second in a travel trailer, and third in a roof top tent with 2 kids under 4! Each time was a great experience. So many upgrades as well.

We loved camping here. It was quiet, great views and pretty secluded from other campers. A great place to watch the stars at night and wake up with a coffee overlooking a farm and the sky as a backdrop. We loved how you are allowed to bring in firewood yourself, but if you forgot, you can purchase from them. Close to hiking, Julian pie, c couple cages, Julian if you'd like. We had everything we needed for our stay. Great place!

The Real Teal -VCT#1 - Pet Free
This site was really nice for an overnight stay! We really enjoyed the view and amenities available in the camper (bathroom, kitchen, dining area). There’s also a lookout point which has a beautiful view of the area. The site has a shower but the water was just barely above cold temperature. However it was tolerable & nice to have the option to shower after a day of hiking.

Sunshine Retreat- VCT#2 - Pet Free
This spot was generously spaced, offering plenty of privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. The setup was well-designed. The RV has everything you need and very clean. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a cozy getaway with great hosts!
