Wondernut Farm is an upstart, entirely off grid, working farm-stead being built from the ground up. We breed milking goats and sheep, heritage pigs, and are in the process of converting to a grade A dairy and creamery! We use organic practices, management intensive rotational grazing, and dryland pasture management. We sell our animals locally so that others can have their own milking and meat animals. Our 110 year old hay barn and the roof of the former lumber mill were all we had to work with in getting off the ground. Being first and foremost a functional farm, we can't help but offer a somewhat warts-and-all look into everything it takes to be working to our goals. Our hearts are, and always will be, educational and local community focused, and we work closely with farmers and friends alike in better understanding our innovative animal husbandry, power, pasture and water systems. Whenever we have time, we'll afford the same time and opportunities to interested hip-campers. Our location is stunning and historic, and the beauty of the wild, natural landscape is powerful, yet offers easy access to both Yosemite Valley and the San Francisco Bay area. The area features excellent road and mountain biking in the immediate vicinity, vast access to hiking and backpacking trails, a huge variety of rock climbing in the area, the best whitewater rafting in California on the Tuolumne River, with some tasty places to eat or drink coffee in the nearby town of Groveland, just 10 minutes away. Accommodations at the farm are certainly rustic, and private but not secluded, with occasionally heavily project-exploded shared kitchen and living space, showers, and airy flush toilets. Do be advised that animals are pooping, hammers are hammering, sometimes we need to look into a health or animal injury related issue. Sometimes there is blood in an animal birth or slaughter, and our working guardian dogs have been known to be noisy some nights. Water and electricity are both very limited (though we reuse all our water), waste must be carefully sorted into a number of different categories, and there is always evidence of ump-teen projects unfolding at once. The most difficult condition during much of the summer are nuisance flies, which are always gone at night. We have almost no mosquitoes or ticks. Depending on the exact situation and time of year, guests may have the opportunities to snuggle with baby animals and run our herd to or from pasture, and maybe even get their hands dirty picking veggies in the garden.

The Guest Cabin Farm Overlook

98% (273)
Cabin · Sleeps 6
This quaint little one room cabin overlooks our 110 year old barn and garden. In the heart of the living space of our working farm, Hipcampers can expect a little more social and farm noise (goats, sheep, dogs, pigs, laughs), clean sheets, and parking right next to the cabin. The wood burning stove is off line for the summer season due to fire concerns, and there are lots of exposed screens to keep summer sleeping temps ideal, though the cabin does get hot during the day. The cabin is a short walk from our lovely open air flush toilets and world class shower buildings. Two sleep comfortably in the cabin's comfy queen sized bed. Additional campers are required to bring tent or tarp, and their own bedding, as there are two small tent sites adjacent to the cabin. A kiddo or two can fit on the floor, but bedding and sleeping pads are not provided. Like many structures on our farm, this building is made exclusively out of home-made and recycled building materials, including the floor from an old --Antarctican-- bowling alley! There is lots of character in a tidy little package.

The Wilderness Bridge

100% (130)
Cabin · Sleeps 2
Featured on Cabin Porn (Summer cottage in the western foothills of Sierra Nevada Range, California.), this cabin is a whirlwind of sensations and tidbits. The arches are recycled from Korean War era arctic huts. The beams, windows, and door are salvaged from various demolition project-adventures, and the siding and cabinetry are home-made from locally sourced, rough sawn, beetle killed wood. All of the building materials were carried by hand the last few hundred feet to their construction location, though an unprecedented, torrential storm in late March 2018 eradicated all hope of future vehicle access. Luckily, this cabin is a bridge and it held strong as the creek below cut itself down to bedrock. Emboldened by a 15 minute adventure approach, ankle-twistingly perilous for the non-hiker, past wild grape, Himalayan blackberry bramble and California's ubiquitous poison oak, into the coziest, sleep-in-est, cutest, unlikeliest little honeymooner suite we could muster. We haul water into this cabin for drinking, and once in, you can feel great about laying about for a morning a world away from everything. We're working on building a composting toilet system for this space, but in the meantime, folks can use a non-smelly humanure-type bucket toilet at the cabin or our wonderful main farm composting toilet- Pootopia! The shower is our main outdoor shower in the main farm area, so after long days folks may want to shower right when they get back to the farm, before they head out to the bridge for the night, or in the mornings before heading out.

The Lookout

97% (120)
Cabin · Sleeps 4
The Lookout, The Wheelhouse, The Tugboat, the Tower of Power, the Poop Deck: everyone wants to call this place something silly and unique, but one thing is for sure, this place is a glorious place to sleep. Built on a large platform creating shade for our solar-power-generating shipping container, Hipcampers walk up a flight of stairs to enjoy 360 views of much of the farm's infrastructure as well as the undeveloped woods. All of the materials this cabin is built from tell a delightful story of creativity and ecological sustainability. This place screams off-grid. There is just one super comfortable full sized bed in this cabin, a little of floor space (1-2 people extra can barely fit to sleep), though there is a small flat area next to the cabin that campers can pitch a tarp or a tent for a small additional fee. We can only offer bedding and accommodations for the bed itself, and extra folks will need to bring their own pads, bedding, and if desired, tents. Windows are removed during the summer half of the year, and wall panels fold out of the way to maximize airflow and still guarantee privacy. There is even a small electrical outlet so campers can charge their devices or enjoy a little nighttime reading.  Folks have access to our outdoor shower and composting toilet that are located in a main part of the farm. We ask campers to please avoid hanging out by the solar panels the cabin looks out onto, as they are fragile and important, and the location is not protected from falls.
