I loved my stay at fern flats! I got the most amazing sleep, the birds provided beautiful music and it was absolutely quiet at night. I would definitely return. There was construction noise in the mornings though which Matt had zero control over. Hopefully the construction noise will be gone soon. The bottom line is that this place was great!

This was my first Hipcamp experience and it was wonderful. The tent space was so cute and offered me the perfect amount of privacy. The facilities were clean and the staff was pleasant! This is a gorgeous, special place.

It's a beautiful site with plenty of accommodations for a comfy stay. I'd say it's much more glamping than camping, and our "walk in" site was just down a quick flight of stairs from our car - barely any walking needed! Definitely recommend

This is the perfect spot if you want all the nature without the people. It’s very private and there’s a small trail to follow in case you want to explore. It’s big enough for two people in one tent to camp comfortably. Otherwise, you could maybe fit one more person. The host is incredibly friendly and helpful.

A beautiful property with a lovely host. Plenty of privacy. Loved the outdoor shower and tub. The water was hot fast. So many interesting animal sounds in the morning.! An amazing campground, truly. If you aren't big on animals then perhaps rethink, but I loved the dogs and goats prancing about. We became friends. The goats didn't eat our tent, very cool. There are also baby goats, so sweet, the technical term is "kid." The shower was lovely. A storybook site, and while the rooster alarm clock was unexpected, I could not find it in myself to be frustrated by the chickens nature. There's even a kitchen!

My partner and I absolutely loved it here! The eclectic yurts were awesome and the views were great. This host was so accommodating and was super helpful. We loved the army of chickens and ducks on the property as well! If you are looking for a nice getaway this is the place!

This campsite is an absolute must-check-out! Such lovely people share the magic of this space. You truly get to breathe in Happy Valley, all while being super close to town. I used this as my base camp to venture out further through the week, and I have to say, I was always so happy to return to my tub, have a soak, and just take in the air. the host is so lovely! it's a little loud when windy just because of the dividers but that also means you get some nice privacy. it was nice and shaded and had some lovely chairs. we didn't use the tub but it looked really cool!

4 nights at Whiskey Hill Barn and Camp

What a special place to group camp! We hosted a retreat here and it was amazing. The barn kitchen allowed us to serve upscale fare to our guests. The firepit provided a cozy place gather in the evenings and roast marshmallows. Plenty of room for tents, though the ground is a bit sloped. Lots of games to play — corn hole, ping pong, disc golf and more. Not quite glamping, but pretty darn close.

We had people swear that this is the best bed they ever slept in. The campground is located in a serene oak grove area of the property. We're only 11 minutes away from Mount Madonna State Park and just 10 minutes from a local healthy grocery store and yoga studio. The beautiful Pajaro Dunes coastal area is just a 15-minute drive away, and the Santa Cruz Fairground is only two minutes away. This campground is also a great setting for your celebrations with two stages, a celebration area, a stone fired pizza oven and a sound systems (These are extras). We are here in Gilroy Ca, on a rural 2 acres just outside of town, further up our road is Coyote Lake to go boating and fishing and Harvey Bear park to go hiking and horse riding. Santa Cruz is a 45 min drive West over hwy 152 and San Jose is 30 min North on 101 and keep going a bit more and you will be in San Francisco. Here at home we raise several different kinds of lives stock. Goats for meat and milk, Sheep for meat and wool and eventually milk, Pigs for meat, Rabbits for meat and hide, Chickens, Ducks and Quail for meat and eggs. We have a garden and small orchard with nearly a dozen fruit trees of different kinds : loquat, a few apples, plums, apricot, peach, fig, persimmons and my favorite the pomegranate! We process everything ourselves using ancestral techniques and love to share and learn with others. Id say the main draw back here is the traffic noise but beyond that, We are quite lucky to have very a green and Id say an oasis of a property, with multiple large palms trees surrounding the pool area and a large weeping willow tree in the main yard/sheep pasture. At the NE corner of the property is a very large oak tree, it is majestic and with the tipi door open to the East the big oak is the first thing you'll see every morning besides the suns rays! The entire Northern property line is rowed with 60ft tall redwood trees and there are a smattering of citrus trees around to boot! The freezer is stocked with in house meat, the BBQ is hot, the pool is cool, come relax after a day on the trails!

All of our sites are hike in sites. It's about a 1/4 mile hike on a small foot path. We have a wagon available for guests to use and we are happy to help you carry your things. We host a communal fire pit in the evenings, weather permitting, for all guests to enjoy, we do not allow open fires on the property. Cal Fire has requested that all campers get a permit, even to operate a gas stove. Water from our well is always available outside of the restaurant and bathrooms with running water are available during business hours. There is a fire trail along one of our ridge lines that offers stunning views of the San Antonio Valley as well as our abundant wildlife. We sometimes host speakers and educational workshops and guests are always welcome to participate in events. Campers, trailers, RVs and Vans are welcome to stay in our lot but we currently do not have hookups available. Have a large group? We are happy to reserve group sites.

Big Basin Redwoods

Big Basin Redwoods State Park is home to a 2,000-year-old Redwood named Mother of the Forest, which stands 300 feet tall. The protected groves of coast redwoods in Big Basin and neighboring Little Basin are among the state’s most magnificent—and resilient. Once recovered from wildfires and reopened to the public, these camps will again offer tent spots and cabins for rent.

Felton

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park covers 40 acres of old-growth redwood trees in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Henry Cowell boasts a popular swimming hole known as the Garden of Eden, as well as trails for hiking and horseback riding. Next door in Felton is Roaring Camp Railroads, where you can ride a steam locomotive through the forest.

Capitola

New Brighton State Beach sits on a bluff surrounded by eucalyptus trees. In addition to tent sites, the campground has RV sites with hookups, but trailers looking for an RV park should check Seacliff State Beach. Sunset State Beach Campground, which lies further south along Monterey Bay, overlooks a quiet, uncrowded beach near Pajaro Dunes. Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay KOA isn't far if you're looking for family camping with lots of amenities.

Monterey

Follow Highway 1 around the bay all the way to Monterey, home to a state-of-the-art aquarium. En route, it’s worth a stop at Elkhorn Slough—part of the Moss Landing State Wildlife Area—where campers can rent a kayak and paddle among the sea otters.

When to go

Summertime in Santa Cruz attracts crowds, and the beaches and campsites tend to fill up. Book ahead and plan your trip well ahead of time, or explore during the off-season. Autumn and spring are typically temperate, while cooler months may require preparations for rain. From December to February, thousands of monarch butterflies overwinter in Monarch Grove, a natural preserve at Natural Bridges State Beach where you can visit tidepools year-round.

Some parks and forest trails may remain closed due to dangerous conditions or fire damage.
Dogs are allowed in some campsites, picnic areas, and select trails in California state parks.
Participate in the Crumb Clean Campaign to protect the marbled murrelet, an endangered seabird that nests in the forest canopy.
Surfboards and equipment, including wetsuits, can be rented at Cowell Beach on the Santa Cruz Wharf.
Felton features a historic downtown where campers can purchase provisions at a natural foods store, find delicious eats, and enjoy wine tasting and craft beers.
